Depends on the region right ? I live in Washington dc and the only reason I even take it out of my garage is to drive it with the top down. right now that's about 3-4 times a week

I live in SoCal. Everyday when it's above 70 and below 90. Sometimes I go a week or more without ever putting top up.

Whenever it's warm and sunny, or when I feel the urge to hear the V8 roar.

30 days a month.
So often that I'm concerned the parts will wear-out within a year. (i.e. anytime between 60-F and 90-F, every single day.) So, are you trolling? (new member, few posts [6], with a confrontational statement/post as one of your initial actions) .

This is an opportune thread. I've been meaning to ask whether people have had issues with their top. I just bought my convertible and the car has 40k miles. I'm debating on whether I should buy the extended warranty. I assume that the hard top is an expensive repair for whatever goes wrong with it.

Online forums are famous for people posting problems/complaints rather than compliments, and usually after that amount of time you can see trends of common problems/design flaws based on the number of threads/posts about a particular topic (i.e. RFTs and HPFPs, etc). That being said, other than a few isolated incidents, I have not seen *any* threads about the hardtop convertible tops malfunctioning or failing with any regularity or commonality. Which means, other than a few fluke incidents (which will occur with any components), the top seems to be very robust and reliable." maxmak wrote: "i am planing to buy one,,thats why i ask people about is the convertible useful." Useful? Hmmm. Don't know about practicality, but it is a scream! .

I live in Canada (Vancouver) and can honestly drive with the top down year round (weather permitting of course)
You don't give up much with the vert in my humble opinion. Last weekend I drove my buddys 09 E92 coupe with my car back to back several times and didn't notice much performance difference. Interesting comments: we both felt the E93s suspension was stiffer (his car has EDC mine doesn't). He found the exhaust of my car remarkably loud with the top down compared to his car. I thought the sound system of his car sounded better (both have the Executive package). His car is a 6 speed and my car is DCT. I found the clutch too light for my liking and didn't like the action of the shifter but did miss rowing through the gears like I did in my old M5

I drive 1/2 and 1/2 top up/down. More in spring and fall. One of the guide strings on my 30k miles 08 lost its black cover and was replaced under warranty.
I felt that the e46 vert suffered compared to the e46 coupe in terms of weight and performance, but I really enjoy my e93, despite the wait. I would never own this car w/o an extended warranty....

but its true, i can't find any threads mentioning issues with the top. i've tried searching the 3series forum too and not much there
so at 4500 for an extended warranty now that takes me an extra 3 yrs, i'm not sure its worth it. at 2500 i think its easy insurance but 4500 may be worth self insuring jeff |

The top down opportunities are probably regionally different - in the Mid-atlantic area spring and fall are the best. The ease of which the top is engaged makes the decision an easy one on the fly, and I tend to have it down 3-4 days a week, aside from winter. Even in the hot, dog days of summer, I cannot fight the urge to hear that symphony from the exhaust and the hot wind going by.
I think the ability to have the car change its character is worth the additional cost and weight. Although altering the cars look top up, I like it. Top down it is indisputably, a looker. I also think you lose two speakers with the E93, which is why the coupe stereo may have sounded slightly better in addition to the cabin dampening. I would however get the premium sound, as it will take a little extra punch to compete with the wind, although the stereo is always outmatched with the top down by the killer band in the back

Some of the weight is stiffening added here and there to help make up for the lost structural rigidity. I haven't seen a number but the weight of the top and its mechanism is only some fraction of the increased weight added by getting the vert. Not that I think it would be cheap mind you! lol

As often as possible until it gets too humid. Cant beat the engine roar. Love it either way but when I drop the top just cant explain that.
