Superglue on the Hood...

So, I'm new here and this forum is amazing but I've been leeching so far, haven't really contributed to it [yet].

But I was super gluing a project together and a TINY piece of super glue decided to land on the hood - and I was at Walmart so I bought acetone and it worked extremely well at first and then nothing else would come out and it seems as if it got "into" the paint.

It's not too noticeable but in direct sunlight it stands out like crazy.

Would BMW service department be able to do anything about it?

try clay bar 1st...and if that doesn't work. try polishing it off. I think walmart sells Meg ultimate compound and swirl X.. try those two with a hand application and see.

Thanks I tried that last night and it got rid of a lot of it with the Q-tips. But it got into the paint and caused minor marks and scratches so I took it to a body shop for an estimate to get it sanded and buffed. Hope it works out well.

Thanks for all the help!

I think acetone is part of your problem. AFAIK, extended exposure to acetone will soften the clear coat to the point where it will begin to rub off. You may have damaged the clear coat.

I know this sounds crazy but you would have been better off using a razor blade to gently scrape it off and then lightly buff the clear coat, similar to how runs are removed from fresh clear coat.

I was specific to use the acetone sparingly..it would not burn the paint to the degree that you need sanding?

A light polish perhaps...do you have any pics?..

I have used acetone on paint for this exact reason..superglue run off when gluing an emblem.. and didnt have any paint issues

I'm a little bit further away (Florida). Lol but definetely I'm keeping superglue far away from the car now...and I bought Quixx Paint Scratch Remover from Walmart for $15 and it seemed to pretty much get rid of the whole scratch!

I first sanded down the area for 10 seconds then applied step 1 "polish" for around 5 minutes. My hand almost fell off. Then I applied step 2 "finish" which is basically just wax and it smoothed it down nicely.

Still somewhat noticeable, but not nearly as bad as it was before I did this. I wish I had taken a picture of what it looked like before and how it looks now. Big improvement.

Thanks for all the help!!

I took some super glue off of an Audi with makita, orange pad, and compound. No problem.

Acetone was a bad idea man

Yeah that's what probably caused the scratch to deepen but it made it so much better with the stuff I bought at Walmart. So I'm pretty happy myself. I think that's what may have caused it to chip a little. But oh well.
