DCT failure
Just wondering how many people out there have had DCT issues? My car had to be towed off on the 14th because the tranny just stopped working randomly while I was trying to merge onto traffic. Like this has happen to me before but not to the point where the car wouldn't turn back on like this time. The first time this happened I was making a right turn at a stop light. I was down shifting from 4th to 3rd but the car wouldn't let me then a check engine light came up. No cars were behind me so I let it roll to a stop put it in neutral then back into gear and it worked fine. Took a pick of the fault on the Idrive showed my service adviser. They couldn't replicate it and seen no codes so they gave the car back. fast forward about 8-10 months from then now my car dies on me. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem/situation as me.
edit: forgot to add my car is a 2009 MY currently have 46k miles. Also the tech said they got the car to turn back on and they are replacing the ECM that controls the transmission. That is what they think will get it to work. I won't know till this coming Tuesday

Have not heard of this, any updates. Also, see you have the 3.62 on the DCT, any word from BMW about that? Hope it's just a software glitch.

This isn't something that you come across too often. The last time I saw something like this it turned out to be what Klammer mentioned a glitch. If they're tearing it apart though it seems to be more serious? At least your still covered under the warranty

I got that DCT malfunction, but after restarting in parking lot. Went away after about 10 minutes and a restart.
I did a search awhile back and think a few others have had this problem, mostly a software glitch IIRC. Having to get it towed is probably for the best as it be pretty much impossible to replicate. |

I have M3 e92 '09 DCT and I'm having an alert message coming in the screen indicating "Transmission Fault" & "Start Assistant Inactive" and the Gear shifting light is OFF! it seems to me as its the same problem you are having? I don't really know what the problem is as I took the car to the local dealer and they couldn't figure what the problem is and the next day I took it from them and it was running normal again but after two weeks the problem seems to be back again! and this time I can't even shift from P position to move the car! BMW agency told me they we will open the gear and check it if I want but I'm still not sure whether I should do it or not? my car already done 78k miles |

I had a problem with my DCT a few months back and got it replaced under the warranty. You can see the thread here:

There have been very few reported failures of the DCT unit. One or two reported problems on such a high performance high volume car does not warrant going with a different tranny for that reason alone. If the fluid is changed as often as on the MT units, I'm confident they'll see similar reliability and life.

^ I second that. There have been failures, but the rate is low enough to not worry too much about. It's not like the engine failures on 996's or anything. But if that justifies saving the ~$3k by leaving the DCT box unchecked in your head, by all means...

Not exactly. I have seen a few smoked clutch threads which I have not seen with the DCT and yes I think its fair and right to add the clutch in with the stick since its part of the DCT. Combine that with the money shift guys I have read about and probably it gets pretty close. And before you say the money shift guys didn't know how to drive that is what every money shift guy says right up until he does it.

As for money shifting..i have owned only MTs for the last 20 yrs..and have never even come close to money shifting but I guess for some out there its a legitimate concern |
