High Coolant temperature / Loud Fan Noise

So I was driving in traffic this morning when the radiator/coolant fan started making a loud whining noise, as if it was trying to cool down the engine. Then, as I drove off, the oil temperature gauge started rising quickly to around 240F. I then got the SES light with 'increased emissions' message (this came on a couple of weeks ago and went off).

I drove slowly to the dealership, and when the SA read my key, he said that the coolant temperature sensor was faulty and that coolant temperature reached 404F.

Has anyone had the same problem? Could it be a much bigger problem like broken water pump? Thanks guys.

45k miles, no warranty.

Detail coming soon, I live in a very dusty climate. I hoping it's just a faulty sensor.

Dealer said they need to replace coolant temperature sensor, hydraulic tensioner, hoses etc.

going to cost me $1200

My first out of pocket repair.
