Go Karting Techniques.
I've recently joined a Go Kart racing league and I'm wondering if any of you here can help me out by answering a quick question. I'm quite the noob at this so please bear with me.
I've been told that tires that are hot provides more grip than cold ones. Does violently swerving and drifting to heat up the tires (during the warm up lap) help you get better grip? I've read some stuff and there have been a few different answers. Some say it does help and others say even if it does, the difference is minimal since it's not the temperature of the tires that affect the performance, it's the temperature of the track itself. |

it's both, but you need to get the rubber warmed up for them to reach maximum efficiency. Tires can also overheat and become slick, so there is a balance to be reached. Depending on the type of go-kart, you will most likely NOT overheat the tires. And yes, swerving during warm-up laps does help heat up the tires.

I've been told you need to accelerate and brake repeatedly to heat up tires. Turning side to side is to clean junk off the tires.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I'm positive that swerving does help heat up the tires since it creates friction and hence, a rise in temperature. However, there have been extensive discussions on other boards on whether it helps you get more grip or not. I just wanted to see what you guys think.
My opinion is that if it works for the F1 guys, why not us? lol. Obviously there are so many flaws to that argument but I do think that the basic principles are the same whether it's F1 or Go Kart Racing (keeping a good racing line, going through corners smoothly and of course, heating up the tires.) |

As a noob, heating the tires is the least of your worries. Take some racing courses to gain the experience that you need.
