Spark plugs

Just wondering I see a lot of member have had their spark plugs replace. I asked my SA about it and he said it doesn't need it. I got a 08 6MT with 45,000km.
When did you guys change yours?

The manual (for my 08) calls for plugs at 37k miles at the latest, but BMW says this is a condition based service (CBS) so the computer will determine when they are needed. Mine got changed at 28k miles.

^This. You should lobby hard to have it done at least once while still under warranty.

Question for the OP: Are you the original owner of the car? If not, perhaps they were changed some time ago and that is why the SA is telling they are not due for a change.

Like others, mine were changed at 23,000 miles as part of a regular service visit...

As stated above, the manual says to replace every 37,000 miles.

He said 45,000 KILOMETERS, so no, the "stealer" is correct

It's also based on the Key Data. If the spark plugs are not checked on CBS Data, you're not getting spark plugs.

Actually, in the manual it explicitly states that plugs are NOT part of CBS (will not come up on computer). Simply says to change every 37k miles.

Can't confirm or deny this as I don't have a manual in hand but I do know that I had my service indicator pop up on my car for service. I knew I was due for an oil change and figured that was reason for the notification. Needless to say I was surprised when my SA put the key in the reader at his computer and said I was also due for new spark plugs.

Something in the system notified my SA that the spark plugs were due for a change and as I noted above, this happened with just over 23,000 miles on the car.

I chose the words in my post carefully for a reason. The manual says 37k but *BMW* has taken to calling for them only when CBS dictates. I actually went through an exhaustive escalation at BMWNA trying to get my plugs changed at 40k when I was trying to chase a power issue. The dealer didn't see a record of them being changed before 40k, so I insisted that they change them since I was past 37k. BMW refused to change them and said the manual was wrong, that they were now changing based on CBS only not at a fixed mileage. After digging deeper into my history, the dealer found my plugs had actually been changed at 28k (the service history was messed up somehow.) Bottom line is that don't be surprised if your dealer won't change unless the car calls for it.

This is news to me. Where does it come up? Is it only identifiable by a dealership?

The warning in my case was a generic service due message on the dash and in the iDrive. No specifics are given in the car but the SA was able to see what was due by reading the info from my key...

I brought my car in for an oil change and my SA also said mine was due for new plugs, but the car doesn't show any indication lights. So I think they need to read your keyfob to know. My SA said it is based on the drivers driving habit to determined when plugs need to be changed.

+1, lots of misinformation here about CBS and plugs.
