Oil level was OK now too high?

Hey guys,

I have a 2013 BMW M3 and I've had it for 2 weeks. I checked the oil level throughout these two weeks and it was reading OK, and took it for a drive yesterday (~120 miles) and decided to check the iDrive and saw there was a warning for oil level too high. The car does not display any warnings on the dashboard and the warning is only there if I manually check the iDrive. Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Thanks all!

To be sure get yourself an oil reading tool that many of us use!

Do you mean that button on the dashboard on the lower left corner?

Got it to re-measure but still reading high. I find this odd as it was reading oil level OK beforehand.

Not strange AT ALL.
Your oil indicator in your car is inacurate as fuck! Dont rely on the built in oil measurement. Get the car ASAP to the dealer, in no way stomp on it, drive carefully, you could seriously put your engine in jeopardy.

This has happened to me before. After my oil change it showed my oil level was normal. Then the next week, the iDrive showed oil level was too high. I just drained the oil from the oil drain bolt that is the closest to the front bumper. Then I rechecked it was showed the oil level is normal (right on the max line). No problems for me after that. Just make sure to drain some oil out before putting any more miles because that can cause problems. I recently did another change and so far so good after 200 miles.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I took it in to the dealer yesterday and they drained some out so hopefully it doesn't happen again. Turns out they had overfilled it before I bought it but for some reason was showing normal still. Wish these cars had a dipstick
