However, anything (including a Yugo), is capable of lasting a "lifetime." It all boils down to how much money and time you are willing to spend to replace broken or worn-out parts. All you have to do is look at the number of pristine collector cars that are better 40-50 years later than they were the day they rolled off the assembly line. Most of those weren't known for reliability in their day either.

All my BMWs have failed at some stage due to the electrical / electronic systems.

Totally agreed - the electronics won't last forever and the parts won't always be available, even if the mechanics last a long time.

I think an m3 will last 15 years tops as well cared for daily driver. Most of these cars are designed to last 200k miles. After that millage, it just becomes ridiculously expensive to keep running them. It sad, but its the truth. The only german cars that can go 400k plus are the VW tdi and porsche 911. I read somewhere that the 911 gt3's engine was designed to last 100k miles at the track, which is why over 90% of the porsches ever made are still running.

Oh and dont follow the manual word by word because it wont last more than 100,000 miles, the service intervals are stupid and ridiculous.

I was about to say the same when I read your post. The comparison to 40's 50's cars is obsolete because of all the electronic and complicated car system. |

I was about to say the same. The comparison to 40's 50's cars is obsolete because of all the electronic and complicated car system. The problem is that everything is so interdependant now that when one part will start to fail it will look like many more things are wrong and service shops will pimp you $$$ at wish.[/Q |

I think the OP was referring to time, more than mileage. I don't think nobody expects an M3 to last 200K miles without dumping a good chunk of your retirement fund. But at 5K miles a year, like many of us put, how many years would it last? As previously said, it'd boil down to ELECTRONICS. Too many electric/electronic crap on these cars for them to be nearly as reliable as an old car where the only electronic part was maybe the ignition. And the stereo. Different times indeed.

Me too!!
...but at the same time I must agree with the comments made on the impact of all the onboard electronic systems, which is why I somewhat regret having taken the Tech Package?!?

If you buy the car new, service it regularly, keep the paint and seals well maintained, DONT DRIVE LIKE A MANIAC, and keep it garaged and clean I don't see why it would not go to 250,000 miles at least. Just my 2 cents. (not factoring in car accidents and theft) My very first BMW (5 series) crossed the 300,000 mile mark before we donated it. |

I don't know how long mine will last but I am going to maintain it properly and try to use all its capabilities in a safe manner. I've had mine to the track 8 or 9 times and plan to continue this hobby. I am not saving this car for the future though I hope to own it a long time.
