Sao Paulo...

I am thinking about going to Sao Paulo later this month. I've never been to south america so if you guys have any tips, info, whatever... please give them out. What can I expect? what should I do? what should I avoid... any info that will help me prepare I will appreciate it.

Thanks

Stay away from the "Favelas" says FAveHlas, keep your car doors locked, don't walk at night by yourself, don't let people know that you are american when you are out, don't make eye contact with woman's with man that can be very serious problems, don't drink to much and don't care credit cards or to much cash on you.

this above are basics.

Why are you going there for?
How long you plan to stay?
Where?

Why not to choose a nicer more tourist friendly part of Brasil?

Sao Paulo can be worse then NYC at night, and is bigger than NYC.

^ dio has it down.

Carry r20s or less. Most people don't have change for bigger bills, a lot of buses won't even break larger bills. Even at the market they have to ask a supervisor for change.

Watch out for trannies. Don't fight with guys with cauliflower ear unless you are a Black Belt in Jiujitsu.

Women are very open there, but yea watch out she might be taken.

Go do a drop-in at a Jiujitsu school and take some classes.

that bad huh?
No real reason... just have free time this month. It's hard to come by so wanted to take a trip to somewhere i've never been. I heard Brazil is fun and from my short research, it looked fun with some interesting places.
I am planning to stay 5 days maybe stretch to 7 depending what is there to do.
I am planning to stay at a hotel. Saw some cool hotels.

What other places in brazil do you recommend? if Sao Paulo is that dangerous.Rio de Janeiro better?

You can go there, dont get scared. But dont carry too much money on your pockets, and if you go to the beach dont leave nothing like the phone there ... basically is that, be carefull to not stay away from centric places and not do ostentation.

I have never been but my brother went his his gf and her family to Sao Paulo and they told me that Brazil in general is pretty crazy (especially Rio de Janeiro). They told me that petty crimes happen so much that even rich people live in apartments because they have security on site. People drive like crazy there and it basically is a different world.

You are describing Rio and Sao Paulo perfectly, the rest of the country is not like that at all.

I believe it was a story about big businessmen in Brazil about basically there were businessmen who practically never even stepped foot on the ground out of kidnapping/ransom concerns - they would take helicopters from building to building and land on top to minimize their kidnapping risk. IMO would be weird to practically never walk on the street level, just 20 floors up or whatever

lots of good advice for just traveling in south america, the biggest thing is try not to look so flashy, instead of wearing your brand new nikes, try bringing and older more worn out pair. From my years living in Peru, I saw many americans get robbed for their shoes. Same thing applies to jewlery and things a like.

lol on the trannies, one of my best friends is brazilian and he told me how some are impossible to spot, You think they are drop dead gorgeous girls and you get excited cause they come up to you and wanna talk to you but lil did you know, they are a surprise for you

Yep, that's what I hear about the trannies too lol.

Just remember it's a Third World Country and they obviously don't make that much money at all. The average wage is about 10k a year.

Oh don't be so harsh on Rio now, I'm a carioca myself, and it is much better than Sao Paulo.

Rio can be fun, lots of things to do, see, etc...

Salvador - eh, lived there for a year, would rather go somewhere else personally.

Recife - Nice area, you can also visit Natal.

But regardless, for a vacation, plenty of better choices than Sao Paulo.

So since we're on this topic, my friends are planning a trip there for Christmas/New Years.

Rio for Christmas and some all white Copacabana beach party on New Years. Ilha Grande for 2-3 days in between Christmas and New Years. Followed by Iguassu Falls but I might not stay for this part of it.

What do you guys think? I've been to 3rd world countries. Just never South America. Worth going for a week? Flights are pushing $1500.

The whole city is a sewer. The level of poverty is unbelievable. Actually, the whole country is a toilet. Go to a resort in Palm Springs.
