Window tinting

So I have an appointment to get my windows tinted at bmw tomorrow. The cost, $400. This seems to be insanely expensive for tinting but I figure if it bubbles up or something theyll stand by there work and do it over. What do you guys think. Take it to them or some other shop that will cost half the price. I'm thinking if I do it somewhere else and I have a problem with my windows rolling up or down one day, theyll blame it on the tint not being done by them. Therefore voiding the warranty on the window.

i had my windows tinted for $200 and my tinter offers me a lifetime warranty for bubbles. he's won awards in Long Island for his work. i've been using him for the past 15 years and I've recommended him to everyone and only hear words of praise. Joe at Great Neck Auto Glass 516-829-7336.

Ha! There are different brands? I have no clue! But if you have knowledge on this what are some high end brands so I can question them.

400 is a ridiculous price. i know a bunch of places that would do tinting for 200 and even some places for 150. i would rather do it at my own guy and if it bubbles up then get it redone another time, still coming out to cheaper then doing it at bmw.

What about the whole warranty thing? Like if the window gets jammed up one day and they blame it on the tint I got somewhere else. Is that possible?

If it is $400 for regular old tint, then it is over priced. For something high-end like Huper Optik, then the price sounds about right. How many windows are being tinted? Is the windshield beign tinted?

I paid $400 for Huper for all 5 windows, the windshield was an additional $200.

I doubt you will have any warranty problems. Make sure they dot-matrix shows through on the sides and that they go up to the top of the glass.

First of all, if you are getting it done at a dealer you are paying probably 25%-40% markup of what you can get done elsewhere using the exact same tint film the dealer is using. For a dealer price of $400, it is probably not the highest quality film. Become an educated consumer, find out what brand of tint film dealer installs. However, in all liklihood a dealer employee probably doesnt even install it, they probably have "a tint guy" that comes in and sub-contracts to them that you could hire privately for much cheaper.

I only paid $135 for my tints.. 15% all around, no windshield. No problems and it's been over a year. Not even fading. Included is a life-time warranty as long as I own the car. Warranty covers bubbling, discoloring, etc.

EDIT: This place is used by my local Acura dealership and they are the ones who recommended me to them. A friend is a GM there so I asked him first.

That's too expensive IMHO. I got FormulaOne Pinnacle Ceramic 35% all around (except windshield) on my E92 for $260. Pinnacle is one of the best tints available, and while I did get a discount because I got a clear bra at the same time, $400 is extreme. Jersey shouldn't be THAT much more expensive than Austin.

OP, you might want to some research not just on the brands of tints, but the different classes (metallic, ceramic, "regular" whose name I can't remember right now) to see what you want/need and are willing to pay for. For example, base tint tends to be purple, metallic tends to have an orange or green tinge to it, and ceramic just has a smoky gray/black look to it. Metallic should also be avoided if you have Comfort Access because it interferes with radio signals; ceramic doesn't, and it has some of the best heat rejection as well. And as you might have already assumed by now, ceramic is the most expensive. Once you find something that sounds like what you want, search these boards and I'm sure you'll find pics of cars that have it installed.

$400 is completely out of line. I did mine a month ago at BMW for $250. They did a really great job, no issues

Isn't there something a good tinter should remove in the door panel to keep from scratching the tint when it goes up and down?

No, but you're not supposed to roll your windows down for 4-5 days after getting tint done. A good tinter will know about the latch that can be held in to prevent the E92 from moving its windows slightly down when the door is opened though, which will allow them to cover that bottom 1/2" or so.

That doesn't stop some people. But Llumar makes a product called Air Blue which is almost completely clear (80%) yet rejects 50% of infrared; people have compared its blue tinge to the way Mercedes AMG windshields look from the factory, so I can't imagine it causing a problem with the cops. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information out there about it, but I'm thinking about getting it done with the hot Texas summers around the corner. The only potential issue is that in Texas, registration and inspection stickers go on the windshield, plus I have an apartment parking sticker, so I'd have to leave a corner area untinted for those; I'd have to see whether that aesthetic would bother me.

Interesting. Where is this latch located?

Wonder how good/popular it is since they've had it since 2008?
