Change the color of my E92 M3 to Monte Carlo Blue

Hey guys!

I have a 2008 E92 Jeerez Black, and I'm considering to do a full color change. The color I have decided on is Monte Carlo Blue.

I just worry a bit about the process, as I presume this is a color that need several coats with different kind of paint? Does the paint-shop know about this? How about ordering the paint. Does it come as a kit? Is there a description/manual how to respray such a paint?

If anyone has any experience with this kind of work, please reply. I live in Thailand, and sometimes it's a bit of a challenge to communicate properly.

This is not the US, where M3's grow on trees and cost $30K for a 2nd hand one. If you don't have any advise about my question, please don't reply

You just supply the paint code.
They will order it.
They will use their choice of primer and clearcoat

Its a 2008. That mean the value has depreciated a lot already. The work shop I have been visiting, they remove all the parts, sand them, and repaint. I don't do inside, as I no visible parts show anyway. The engine bay doesn't need repainting, as its like a matte factory paint already. The whole job takes about 1-2 months..
I see many cars here with colors, and two my friends have already changed the color of their beemers.

Ok. Primer is the undercoat? Then with the paintcode the different layers of paint will be supplied I guess?

As I dont think the M3 looks good in black, I have already wrapped my car. It's a headache to maintain.

I would also suggest a wrap if you're considering Mineral White. MW is a 3 stage paint job, requiring much more work and attention then a non-pearl paint. This is evident when you purchase smaller items in MW like painted reflectors or painted key hole covers. The paint cannot be matched 100%, iND and other vendors will warn you of this. It is a great color, just something to keep in mind for the future! Paint matching will always prove difficult should something happen down the line.

Thanks for great information!

So do you think its difficult for a professional to make a good result in the first place? Or is it just a matter of maintenance.

I think any knowledgeable and skilled body shop could do a good job at first pass if they're painting the whole car all at once, but if anything were to happen in the future, like an accident, then blending it could be difficult. Not that it's impossible, but it's certainly not as easy as a standard single stage paint job. Just make sure they have a sun gun or something similar to replicate sunlight since pearl type paints have much more depth to them.

My dude.....take a step back lol. You need to strongly consider a wrap, as it's cost efficient and also removable.

You like mineral white? Go get your car wrapped in the 3M 1080 Satin Pearl White. Will cost you around $3-5k, won't harm your re-sale, and it's a truly badass white.

Agree 100%, also why I suggested a wrap. My buddies (SN vastano) e90 M3 is wrapped in 3M Satin White Pearl and it looks incredible, much like my Mineral White without all the worry.

Edit: Here's a picture of his e90

Thanks for all suggestion about wrapping. I already have a 3M Matte White wrap. I am not happy with it. Maybe the company that did it is not good enough, but I will remove it now. That wrapping was $1500, and a paint job is $3000.

Workmanship is cheap in Thailand, but cars are bloody expensive!

satin pearl white and matte white are NOT the same color. My car, shown above, is as close as you'll get to mineral white without painting it.

I am totally aware of that. I just don't want another wrap that keeps cracking up and fall off. Maybe its the heat and the moist air here..

Btw, your pictures look great

there's a whole line of products that protect matte/satin finishes and wraps from environmental conditions....did you ever have these on your previous wrap?

if not...the advice of a wrap, given above, is the best way to go. protect it with said products and you shouldn't have a problem.

Cracking up and falling off? That's the first time ive ever heard of any wrap doing that. Have you tried a spray on wax?

If so, i'd guess the next best candidate would be the climate in Thailand.

Thanks for all advise. Actually I decided to keep it original black..

I just removed the wrapping, and covered a beautiful car - black sapphire - blackout edition. hehe
Carbon front splitter, carbon grilles, carbon mirrors, matte black side fenders, matte black alloys. Just waiting for the Vorsteiner Diffuser Type II and my new Akrapovic/ESS exhaust

I would have killed for a sapphire black e92M , all we got were matte, jet and jerez. But sapphire would have been amazing as I dont like Jerez and Jet is too plain.

I'm glad you decided to keep it. Like these people are saying above. wrapping it the best choice. I'm sure the climate where you live isn't idea. But it honestly sounds like the vinyl wasnt applied properly and it might not have actually been 3M. Next time ( if ever ) make sure the vinyl is real high quality 3M and that they apply it in an airconditioned clean room after washing the car wish some non-wax carwash.

Monte Carlo Blue

Decided to change colour afterall... But dropped Mineral White. According to the shop, it was a difficult colour to get a nice result with. So I went with the one of the most beautiful blue colours Monte Carlo Blue

Here is a few shots. The job is still not completed.
