cant find M-Dynamic settings, have idrive

Hi there,

Just got me a E92, 2009 today (slightly used) in Dubai, UAE. The car has iDrive/M-Settings options + DCT, but only two options under the m-settings:

1) Power: a) Normal b) Sport
2) Gear Shift Lights: a) On b)Off

From the manuals that i've seen for the US models, there shoud be a setting for EDC and also the 'm-dymanic mode' settings. I have a button under the gear stick to set the gear ratios, the 'm-power' button near the stick and a button to turn the DSC on and off. The steering does not have a 'm' button but has a shape of a diamond.

Question is: where do i find the EDC settings or even find out if the car has this option and how do i set the m-dynamic mode???

Any ideas/suggestions/thoughts would really help.

I'm not familiar with the packages of cars sold in your part of the world, but in US versions, you must have the "Tech Package" to get what you're looking for.

There's no M Drive in your M3.

Nope - there is a thread on things the car should have stock but it doesn't, or something to that effect. One of the items most people agree should be in the software, but is not, is MDM.

I think that in Canada that's correct if you order the not-so-incidentally named "M Drive" Package.

Called up the local BMW dealer today and they confirmed that the car probably does not have the m-drive package. I dont have EDC either.

I saw some threads on m3post that mention that there may be a way to get MDM into the idrive software, has anyone done that successfully, does BMW support that?

Lastly, hate to know the answer to this, but what all am i loosing out on from an experience perspective? I will probably take the car on the track once or twice a year but other than that its city driving and porsche killing.

Its going to depend on your skill level...with dry roads you can drive with the DSC off all the time but wheel spin and oversteer will be an issue at full throttle in 1st 2nd and 3rd (maybe even 4th).
MDM lets you drive as if you have the traction control switched off until things look like they are going to get out of hand when it kicks in to save your ass.

Unfortunately, M-dynamic mode is only available as part of the "technology package". This package includes Navigation w/I-drive, comfort access, EDC, and M-dynamic mode. You can get Nav by itself as a stand alone option, and you can do the same with EDC, but you don't get the "M" button for easy changes on the fly. One reason I was really glad my '08 came with the technology package.

There is no MDM "retrofit" to my knowledge. While MDM is really just a software function of the DSC control module, all cars that have MDM also have EDC, which could be a problem. I am not sure if ISTA/P has this retrofit as an option, and if it does, it might require the car to have EDC to change the vehicle order and enable MDM.

It is a shame that at least MDM mode isn't standard. M-drive I understand, because you really need i-drive to configure it. BMW could have easily just made MDM selectable by pressing the DSC button (near the shifter) twice, or something like that.

For what it's worth, I used MDM mode all the time. Well, any time I wanted to have any kind of fun, that is. Standard DSC is a little restrictive in my opinion. DSC "off" can be a handful if you don't have a lot of experience with high HP rear wheel drive cars.

If anyone who is near Santa Barbara wants to see if this retrofit is possible, I'd be willing to check it out. Would just need to start a programming session and see what options are available. Then we will have a solid answer whether this is possible or not.

Just as a FYI you can have a car with idrive/MDM but without EDC...UK cars come with idrive/MDM as standard but EDC as an option.

Seems like your M3 does not have the Tech package which includes EDC and M mode functions.

He's in Dubai. The tech package is a US only option. In most countries MDrive is a stand alone option (albeit one that requires IDrive) and his car simply does not have it spec'd.

MDrive needn't be standard, but MDM probably should be. Even non-M BMWs have two DSC modes standard. They don't have to call it MDM, but there should be a standard DSC setting that is in between On and Off.
