Talking Sounds like a truck!

This is something I've heard a few times now. (only had this car for 5 weeks or so). One chick in my building at work said it sounded like an old Chevy! I just reminded her she's hearing the sweet sounds of a V8! Lots of Chevy's had V8's.hey, I love the sound of a V8 Chevy, truck or Bimmer.

Just wondered if any of you had any comments like that.

AS

BTW - Love this car! It's kind of mental.

Yeah, I've heard the same. Before the SC was added, I had a few people ask if my M3 engine was ok. Usually it was during cold idle when the engine sounded like my Chevy Solid Lifter LT-1 (V8). I actually like the sound.

Nice analogies. It's always interesting to hear what other people think....I always open the window and turn down the radio when an M3 is cruising by to hear (Floor it people!).

Cold starts in the garage are 30 seconds of unbridled mechanical nirvana that can loosen grandpas dentures as he sleeps in the upstairs bedroom, rattle dirty dishes left in the kitchen sink and loosen dust off the opened garage door directly above. Win.

In the CNET review of the M3 the guys says "On a side note for you kids who've only known cars that are high tech and beautifully engineered. This is how you tell when you're driving a real car. The sound it makes when started up cold, cluttering metallic kind of clanking big old lumpy square cam kind of idol, not until it gets to full operating temperature. This car sound like it's not coming unscrewed. That's what a high performance car is supposed to do."

So so true! lol

Yeap i hate that.... people always looked to see what truck it that? then realized WTF its a bimmer?

so to get rid of it. i replaced the OEM exhaust with AKRA... changed the sound of the car... now i dont get that looked or get asked anymore.... i see more jaw dropping...

if you hate that V8 sound, check out the innotech that thing is insane... i might sell my AKRA to get the INNOTECH... i dont know i have to see it in person

hahah this reminds me one time when I was leaving an event with a friend who hadn't seen a car or really any m3 before and I started it up and was pulling out of the parking spot and stopped to chat. (engine was still warming up so the metallic sound was going on) and was like "something is wrong with your car, it doesn't sound right" I just said.....thats how great this V8 sounds.

I was going on to Buckley Air Force Base and when I pulled up to show the guard my ID he said "Is that a hybrid or something because your engine sounds like something is wrong with it?" I just responded by bliping the throttle and he responded "oh wow! Never-mind." lol

I usually get one of two responses...

1) "That sounds awesome, what do you have done to the motor?"

or

2) The middle finger

If I ever get my car coded to remove the Idrive warning, I'll see if I can get this quote to appear on my Idrive screen instead

It almost sounds like a diesel truck truck @ idle, I definitely love the low grumble. When I hear it idle it makes me remember that there is a crazy engine in this car!

Yeah, my wife heard it running cold for the first time this morning and she got a funny look on her face and asked if there was something wrong with it. I replied... sounds great, right!?

There definitely is _something_ that changes after a short time... maybe when the secondary air system valves are open at cold start more noise comes through?

Amen and well said!

I used to love it on my E46, but you know there is no replacement for displacement...Sounds even blockier with a V8
