In my mind if you spent money on a new car, it must be a new car. You can always get a second hand M3 2008 to save money. Also the MY2009 has hopefully resolved the bugs in MY2008.
In five years from now you still have the 'newer' E92 which gets you more money when trading in for a new M3 in 2013...

I agree with that... if you're gonna buy an 08, buy a used one ... resale values on 08's will be tough as buyers will want the latest iDrive... you usually get what you pay for.

The old i-Drive is "functional". The new i-Drive certainly looks good and is easier to use (apparently). The navigation is enhanced with the 2009, but both systems will get you to a final destination at the end of the day. How nice the graphics and user interface are for all of that ... you can determine if you look at both versions.
As far as specifics to the M3, you still have access to the same M-Drive settings with either the 2008 or 2009 i-Drive. One thing they have done is sort out the POI searching with the 2009. They could actually fix this with the 2008, if they really wanted to ... but you can alway go for the additional concierge service and ask them to look up your POIs and download them to the Nav if this is a big deal. Also the 2009 i-Drive will payback DVD movies when the car is parked, so thats nice. But the new storing music on the hard drive feature is, well blah .. if you have a ipod/usb interface it really doesn't make that much odds. I mean, with both, you can quickly and easily listen to all your mp3's should you have some .... If you use iTunes to purchase music, you'll need to use a ipod anyway, as thats the only device that will playback iTunes DRM content. |

2008 i-drive don't play movies, though I think they might do if you have the TV option. Sadly mine doesn't.

I think you can retrofit the Digital TV Tuner in Euro models Footie relatively easily. YOu might want to look into it, if thats of interest.
USA cars can't, however. |

From my understanding the screen size is the same on the 08 and 09.
Only the 7 series Idrive screen is bigger. The resolution is def. better on the 09 but the actual screen size for 3 series Idrive is the same. I sat in a 328 with the new Idrive and size wise it looked the same. Can someone confirm? Am i wrong? Thanks |

I am getting a 2009 MY mainly due to i-drive upgrade. I was able to find a close enough 08 M3 locally (was just missing the 19" wheels) at invoice and I am able to pick a 09 $1K over invoice. Since I won't be financing the car I won't be saving $10K as everyone is claiming. It makes more sense for me to order the exact car I want. Also keep in mind that in 6 months (or so) these cars will be receiving a face lift which will make loose their value and even more for 08 cars with the old i-drive....

If you're not going to finance then get the 09. For the small difference in price you'll get a car that is slightly higher on the depreciation scale plus the benefits of the revised iDrive.

and you don't need a hard drive, just put all the music you want on a small usb flash drive. I have a 4GB in there now, just plug in under the armrest and all folders & names show up on the screen... works as well if not better than plugging in an Ipod

+1. Definitely a no-brainer. If you're paying cash, there is NO reason not to get the dramatically improved iDrive/Navigation, miscellaneous refreshes, more color options and later model year for a small amount extra. You'll recoup the extra in resale. If you think the older iDrive is a little slow/stale now, think of how it will be in 5 years.

I love driving nice cars. I learned many years ago that you can save thousands of dollars if you time your purchases wisely.
If you know who you are and don't have to be the first on the block with the newest toy, you can drive awesome cars without spending silly money to do so. There is NOTHING doing with the "new" I-drive that would make passing up on the current "08 deals worth it. Opt for the '08 and save yourself a bundle. Take the cash and buy a good, quality stock that is temporarily depressed with this crazy market. In 4 years the 10K you save will be 20. Trust me, you will never miss the resolution on the 4 inch screen... you're looking at a map on that screen, not some good looking girl. If you don't like investing, take the $$ and buy a 60" Pioneer Elite 1080P plasma for 6K and a nice surround sound system to go with it. The resolution will look better on your new TV than on your Nav screen. One last thought... with BMW offering money at less than 1%, why would anyone ever pay cash for your car? |

I completely agree. I myself am the biggest techie ever and would have loved to have the new Idrive. I'm leasing my car and the difference in payments was night and day. Things in Canada don't work like they do in the Usa. You wanna lease a 09 M3 Cab you'll be paying 1950$ a month on a 36 month lease. What did i do? Went for the 08 and i'm paying 899$ a month on 36 months. Anyone who tells you go for a 09' in this situation beacause it has the new Idrive is just an idiot. Yes the new Idrive is cooler but please my 08' Idrive works perfectly. I had it in my 07 335 E92 and loved it. And i still do!! |

I bought the '09 because I wanted the latest and greatest gadgets...the new iDrive was a seller to me.
The 2008 is fine but now that the 2009 models are out, the 2008's are 1 year old as soon as you drive it off the lot. There goes $10K in depreciation. If for some reason you had to sell the '08 in two months, you'll owe more on the car than it's worth. You could still be making payments on the car after it's sold. At that point, you might consider taking a credit hit and defaulting on the loan....you'll save a bundle. |

Agree with JIO. The dealer wanted me to go with the '08 pushing the concept of the $thousands in savings. When presented with the additional year of depreciation due to the model year change, he had no response other than - "that's correct." The primary reason they are offering 0.9% on '08s is that these cars are now on the obsolete inventory list. Moreover, I get the 4-5 year loan for cash flow flexibility and pay it off in 2 or less so the difference is not a big deal...

Agree about the depreciation issue. Due to the "one-year old car" issue, leasing an '08 is a better option than purchasing one when the interest charges are comparable. Resale will take a huge hit depending on the one-year model year difference even if the cars were identically equipped (which they won't be if you got i-drive) and had identical wear/mileage.
The other issue that swayed me toward the '09 was that I was buying a Sedan. The facelifted tail is a readily noticeable indicator to the trained eye (i.e., most used M3 buyers) regarding how old the car is. |
