This was my first time driving at TWS. My best recorded time was a 2:04.1. I only kept times for the second session yesterday. I am certain that I was quicker in the 3rd session though, but didn't record times so no proof haha. I hope to get to 2:00 lap times by the end of the season this year. Car was stock except for aftermarket sway bars. Are you going to the MSR Drivers Edge meet in two weeks? |

I just clicked on this link for the first time. Wish I saw it before. I would really like to try a track day one day and also meet some guys from the houston crew. Is this the only way to find out about the track days or when you guys have a drive around town. At last months coffee/cars there were approx. 10 beamers parked together and that included mine. That was the most I have seen in month in months. Anyway, now that I know about this link, I will try to keep up with some events and when in town, make some of them.

It is a very good organization at a very fun track. The events also do not get too crowded so there is a lot of room to practice and things go a little more smoothly. I just ran with them this weekend and loved it. I will be back for the next event in mid July to run with them again. I would check to see if you can get in to that event. The cost is typically around 300 dollars for the weekend, and maybe an extra 20 bucks to rent a helmet if you don't own one. You get about 2 hours of track time per day split into four sessions per day, which is plenty. You will have a BLAST. The car needs no mods, so you should be good to go in stock form. Hope to see you out there. EDITED TO ADD : you will also get an instructor for the entire time included in the price. This really helps and makes things a lot more fun too, especially if you get a good instructor which you certainly will. |

IMO, the Driver's Edge has the best program for new students. PDS is a close second. The Driver's Edge does put in a lot of effort into driver development and constantly changes and tweaks the program. And the results speak for themselves. The advanced run group is by far the fastest I've seen in TX. There are quite a few guys that would be running at or near the front of NASA TT. The key is to get taught right early to reduce the chances of developing bad habits.

There are a couple of places that will hurt your time... T15 entry - not a hard braking zone. Smooth arc and line up against the curbing on the right. Scrub speed by turning. Look at your data. I'm pretty sure your speed significantly drops from the time you get off the brakes until you setup for T14. T13 exit, can be full throttle at T14. Depends on T15. If you f'd up T15...don't go full throttle. Overslowing for T9. Slight lift or maybe a small tap of the brakes to get the car to turn in (left foot braking would be perfect here). T9-6. Full throttle...don't be a weenie...don't turn in early...don't hit the curbs...don't go off. Deep trailbrake into T6 Flat from T6 apex to T4. T4 - common place to overslow...not a good place to go off. You can really cook through here. A slightly early turn in is the key! T2 - No brake...slight lift. Haven't tried not lifting. I think it can be done. As you build more speed here...the bump on the transition to the front straight gets more dangerous. Be aware! T12 ad T7 - taken flat out. When you turn the wheel...you are scrubbing speed. I'l give you my secret. Early turn in. As soon as you feel the suspension get sucked down by the camber, crank the wheel more. Before the suspension unloads as you pass the apex, unwind the wheel. You have to anticipate. You scrub less speed at turn in because of less steering input. From the outside, the car will actually dance around a bit. Might even look like you are losing control but you are not. Try this at your own peril. I would never instruct a green or blue student to try this. Recommend taking small steps.

Part of it was the fact that I replaced only 2 of 4 tires, thinking that I had more life in the pair than I thought. So my first sessions out I was sliding around a bit and didn't really push as hard through some of the turns as I normally do. The other issue is that I kept getting amber tire, brake, and SMG light through Turn 2 and 1, which weighed on my mind that being said, here's what I see from looking at data....

Yeah, T4 is not a good place CW.
T7...look ahead. Its tough through there because its one long turn. So you have to pay attention or you'll go off after T8 plus 2 flag stations there you have to see. That makes looking ahead more difficult. If you do look ahead then you'll never miss the turn in for T7 because its easy to see and you can get a good read on the correct trajectory for the car.

Once you are alone in the car and start to see the braking points and appropriate corner speed you won't have any trouble comfortably running 2:00 out there.

Once you get there then you can start trail braking deeper and deeper. CCW, T1/2, T8, T10, and T13 are corners where you can pickup quite a bit of time trail braking...and you can trail brake pretty deep into those corners.
