GTR owners?
Really considering this car for later this year and Ill probably keep the m3 at the same time.
Just wanted to ask any owners here about the standard maintenance, mods they did and will want to do, everday drivability, etc. I know it's a different animal and is compared to some of the most expensive cars out there. I do love the way it looks too

Also own both a GTR and M3. M3 is a much better daily, not nearly as harsh and transmission is much better for daily driving.
GTR gets far more attention as expected and is much harsher and faster. Insurance is about the same on both cars. Ive only had an oil change so far because im only at 6k miles. It was about $250 at Nissan. |

about 2 months ago i was in the market on getting a GTR as low as 60k used with 5k or less miles but end up keeping my M3 cause i just could not justify replacing the brake pads and rotor for $4k - $6k ... for a nissan didnt seem pretty practical to me... although the car is a beast like everyone says...
I have driven several GTR as a loaner for the longest 5 days ... and ill tell you this GTR is so much fun to drive BUT.... for some reason after 2-3 days i wanted the M3 back.... i realized that the GTR is fun but is a very harsh to drive on Los Angeles CA area... BUT ILL SAY THIS if i get the deal i want and the color on a GTR... i will and no doubt would not hesitate replacing my M3 over it... OH MY M3 INSURANCE COST ME 90 BUCKS AND THE GTR COST ME 75 BUCKS.... btw im 31 with no tickets or accidents... i dont know maybe its becuase of that... GET ONE YOU WILL LOVE IT... |

You can ask for details here :
http://www.nagtroc.org/forums/index.php?act=idx Here's my personal critique For fun : - Shed 500+ lbs (not flighty enough) - Manual (DCT is a bore) For daily : - Less road noise (this is the only thing that makes this car less than perfectly comfortable) - Auto mode shift to 1st before a complete stop (stays in 2nd till the bitter end. Makes quick stop&go's at a stop sign in Auto mode a pain, as it will roll out in 2nd) Insurance is about $1400 / year (IIRC. I'd have to check my bill) Tax is around $2k / year Tyres will run about $500 each (but I will probably go to 18's anyways and run r comps or semi r comps) Rotors / pads are wear and tear items, and are not replaced under warranty when they wear out. Aftermarket options : Regular DD pads (par or slightly nicer than OEM) : $310 for the entire car http://www.stillen.com/product.asp?i...SAN&model=GT-R $490 front and $340 rear, upgraded pads. http://www.gt-rr.com/product.html?m=...ompound&id=143 http://www.gt-rr.com/product.html?m=...ompound&id=142 (Throw in another $20 bucks for the "Race" versions, but they need to reach 'operating temperature'... less street friendly.) Upgraded rotors. $585 per corner. http://www.gt-rr.com/product.html?m=...c_price&id=529 Mod wise, like with anything, YMMV depending on what dealers you go to. Some have people rolling in with 900 whp and honor their coverage for whatever reasonable item comes up. Others will threaten your warranty because they say your tyre tread is too low and you MUST buy tyres from them (personal experience). In terms of cheap mods, a mid pipe + cobb ap can get your 0-60 under 3. Expensive wise, you can get 1000hp cots. 1200 and 1500 are in the works. But you're looking at big money. -scheherazade Last edited by scheherazade; 01-06-2011 at 12:19 AM.. |

The 2009->2012 engine changes are : new intake new down pipe (new cat is literally what I read) re-tune Basically, the 2012 engine is the 2009 engine with some standard mods. note : 2009 + cobb AP + Y/midpipe can give ballpark 2012 power on an otherwise stock car. What makes the '12 a nice upgrade are all the other little things. The '12 has some chassis tweak that supposedly make for a better handling car that is also a bit more comfortable. Larger front brake rotor are also in the mix plus aero changes that are supposed to make the GT-R more slick while giving it more high speed down force. I've also heard that transmission cooling is now better which will help the car on the track. Plus there are the little things like the now available rear view camera that will make the GT-R a bit easier to live with. |

Upgraded rotors are definitely nice.
Only suspension change I've heard of so far was that they added more caster - which is great for tyre wear since you can have less static camber going straight. (edit : also, the electronic dampers have a larger range - softer soft, harder hard) The way I see it (personally) is that the $~30k difference between used 09 and new 12 goes a long way in mods - which is enough money to exceed the improvements for the new model. But that's irrelevant if you're simply in the market for a new car, which the 12 is, and the 09 isn't. I would probably jump ship if they made a manual version, though. -scheherazade Last edited by scheherazade; 01-10-2011 at 04:26 PM.. |

FYI - This is the 2012 changes, not 2011 (US).

90 is starting to scratch at used F430 prices.
Which would probably be my pick at that price point. Especially since you can get the F430 in a manual (woot). May not be AWD or quite as quick, but I bet with the MT it's a lot more fun, looks sexier, and is smaller/flatter/lighter. -scheherazade |

You can get a 360 around there.
(actually cheaper, 60k is lowest I've found listed : http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/search...=1294769525410) Yes, 430 are about 120 for the cheapest ones. It won't be too long till the ones going for 120 fall under 100. ("scratching at" was meant like "getting there", more than "is there") 360 is the 430 predecessor for that market segment. Look at the 360 prices and ages, you can expect a 430 to be around that price when it's of similar age (not that long of a wait all-in-all). Personally, if I went for it, I wouldn't worry. Life goes on. Worst that happens is you spend some cash, hate it, sell it, get something else. I guess the 90k price point is still a good fit for the GTR. Other options : used 997 or used R8. All good options. I suspect the 997 is the next cheapest to maintain (just because it's so common). -scheherazade Last edited by scheherazade; 01-11-2011 at 01:37 PM.. |

GTR lacks the 'appeal' of a 911, R8, Maserati, etc...I think if you are going to pay for a supercar, you might as well get the full package. GTR has great stats, it's got numbers, numbers and more numbers, but I promise you it will never give you the smile you get when firing up a GT2 for example.
