2008 E90 M3 Check Engine Light- Increased Emissions

Hey guys i went to start my car up tonight and I haven't driven it since tuesday. As I went to start it up all the lights inside the car and the gauges started flickering and the car started up very rough and then the CEL came on. I have an AA drop in filter, resonator delete, and an auto couture exhaust. None of the o2 sensors have been touched so i don't know what could cause this. If anyone as any suggestions please tell me. Btw my car is running up on 65k miles. Thanks guys

Pull the codes. You might want to take a look at the low pressure fuel sensor replacement threads. Mine started like yours, only without the rough idle. I had increased emissions three times total, I think, before replacing the sensor. Also, I had many different codes. Most pointed to the sensor. Good luck!

The code is a network error code, because of the "U" prefix. Mitchell OnDemand repair information lists several different code possibilities, including communication error between DKG (throttle position sensor) and DME (engine control module). The could be simple connector problems or much more expensive components. Even battery voltage can create communication errors.

Try clearing the codes and doing a two trip "drive cycle" to see if the same codes return. If they do you will need someone with good diagnostic skills and equipment. Don't just start throwing expensive parts at the problem.

Any update on what happened? I just pulled the same code this morning. It's been -10°F the past few days, and I had a throttle actuator replaced 4 months ago, other than that no issues. I haven't cleared it and driven any more yet, but will do so on my way home from work.

Hey man kinda crazy you brought this back up lol. My check engine light just came back on right before I was going to get a car wash. Increased emissions again. Maybe because it's under 10 degrees in NY! The first time was because the battery was shot but I'll let you guys know what happens tonight!

I cleared my code before my drive home from work, and this morning it did not come back on during my drive in. If it was indeed a low battery code, it'd make sense since it appeared initially when it was ridiculously cold out, which would cause a loss of battery power on it's own. I'm on my original battery from '08, so I don't doubt that it's nearing the end of its useful life. I'll wait for the code to come back unless it stops cranking.

My shop scanned it for me last night and it wasn't the batter again. I don't know the specific codes but 2 of them were that 2 o2 sensors went bad and that the car was running rich or lean, forgot which one.

To follow up - I do believe it was due to a low battery. Last winter I was on the original, 6 year old battery and the code would come up when it was below 0°F and my car sat in the parking lot all day. It would also crank slowly.
I've since replaced the battery with a new one, and this past week has been consistently -10°F and I haven't gotten any codes nor had any trouble with starting.

you still running strong? I'm wrestling with this and can't figure out if it's a battery issue or if my actuators are effed.

Yep, still going strong, 30k miles later. A new battery solved this issue for me.

Im from Miami and we recently got some colder temps (High 60 to low 70) and my car has been parked for a week. Went to started it up an same code appeared "Low Emissions - Check engine light" code U1118. Went and got a new battery as the car was cranking slow and it was the original battery from 09. Noticed that the old battery had a bump on the positive side ("+"). Erased the codes and lets see how it does. For sure the car cranks up a lot faster and no codes this morning. Happy so far!!!!

My car sits a lot and I got the u1118 network code. I'm hoping its the battery although it showed the follwing image...

What do you think? It did indicate battery low, too.

Well it's a cornering light. But I'm sure that didn't cause the SES light. The battery makes the most sense.

Error code U1118 and U1118P

Hello

I'm in Washington DC and it's cold I also had my 2011 M3 coupe parked for a week. Went to started it up an same code appeared U1118 Increase Emissions Check engine light" code U1118. I see the new battery fix the error code on your car, My M3 also is cranking slow and it's on the original battery from 2011.

Do you mind me asking where did you purchase the new battery, also how did you code the new battery

Thanks

Error code U1118 and U1118P

Hello AW750Li

I'm a little confuse about the error code on my 2011 M3 coupe E92 U1118 and U1118P, I'm thinking on replacing the battery base on some information I'm reading, but I see your shop scanned bad 02 sensor, was replacing the 02 sensor fix the error U1118 on the car.
Are you getting the Increase Emotion error and slow crank start.

Yes, a new battery resolved my U1118 code. That was at 65k miles, I now have over 150k miles on that same battery. It's a Die Hard Advanced Gold 850CCA 92AmH from Sears. I simply replaced it and did not re-code/reset anything and it all worked just fine.
