A Different spare tire solution - BBS LM spare

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Ive been collecting some parts for a while and today I happen to score on the last few pieces of the puzzle.

I decided to build a 3 piece BBS LM space saver tire to go with 20"s I have for the M3

the 20"s are brushed faces with clear, polished lips and flat black barrels really pop

So why not roll in style if a flat does happen?

parts so far bbs LM 5x120 face OFF A 19" WHEEL
2- 18x2 (40hole) reverse lips off ebay that happen to bolt right up
not too shabby that was a bonus.

125/70/18 spare tire I scored for 50$

all is left is valve stem, have to drill one lip for the valve and some silicone.
Also have to get longer m7 bolts, if anyone has 30mm long I will trade for 25mm long ones

Best part about it, it should bolt up to both of my e90's

It will be a 18x4 with 125/70/18 very compact

On long trips just strap in the trunk

Thanks. Was hoping it would fit behind the driver's seat or somewhere other than the trunk. If so, I'd make a 20" LM-R version for myself But if it goes in the trunk, well I have an OEM 220M already back there. Still, great idea. Love the project.

you could, just cut up the wheel and reweld, people widen wheels this way all the time , you would just take a good chunk out of it to make it 4-5" wide only depending on what tire you get your hands on

I haven't really checked if it could go in other places yet. You could make any wheel but is it going to be cost offective that's the other issue

if you start with a 20" LM-R you'd have to find a space saver 20" tire or 19" tire.

if you start with a face from 20" BBS LM-r the smallest you can go with that face is 19" wheel and that's with reverse style lips and not step lips. Unless you do something totally custom and that would be an arm and a leg

Again I did it this way to keep costs down you can go all out and have someone rebarrel but usually people want 600-700 per wheel to rebarrel when I was getting quotes. This in end is going to come out just a little more then getting space saver from bimmerzone.

updates from today

got the longer bolts and a very short 8.3mm valve in and I got to work

bolted everything up with some Loctite

here it is next to a 18" BBS LM

test fitted it to the front of m3, make sure everything clears good to go

did some measurements where to mount the valve and I decide to make it stealth and mount on inside

sealed it all up and gotta wait 24 hrs now

the valve could defenetly be accessed because I placed so it can be accessed through the larger window

so just gotta mount tire now...

Im not sure on BBK as I have stock brakes. Offset wise should defenetly clear big brakes I don't see why not. Diameter wise is very tight, the valve where positioned even though it was a super small one, its only about an inch away from the stock front caliper.

if anyone local wants to test fit for BBK let me know

Nicely done! Probably a hell of a lot lighter than the steel spare as well.

Thanks guys

had a little trouble with the mounting of tire , went to 2 local tire shops to mount it and because the wheel didn't have a chanel in between like the spare they didn't want to take a chance to pop the bead and I dindt want to ruin a 150$ tire so I said scratch that went to plan B

so I took apart whole wheel again and and basically sandwiched the tire with the 2 lips, put seal in between the 2 lips (basically like sealing an oilpan) and mounted the face again

its on there now but have to wait to dry and get air in it

also wanted to add its much lighter then the steel spare, and since the LM is forged wheel, it should make it stronger as well
