Some Airshow pics

First time out with the new 70-300L and also my first time using AI Servo, which works quite well. I was way off the end of the runway outside the fence, so these are major crops. Still, the lens performed well, I think.

There were actually only two aerobatic planes at this show. The other one was very small and did most of his flying at the other end of the runway, so he's just a dot in most of my pics. I have lots of pics of this plane, Big Red, but they're all very similar to what you see. The few WWII planes there were supposed to fly at some point in the afternoon, but I had been there for two hours out in the sun on a 90 degree day. I had had enough. 15 minutes after I got home I heard the sound of radial engines and knew the WWII planes were up. C'est la vie.

I wanted this lens for this airshow, so I pulled the trigger earlier than I had planned. Had I waited one more day, I could have had it for $140 less. But then I wouldn't have received the lens until Tuesday. Ya make your choices and ya live with 'em.

I'm thinking of SF fleet week and the F22 that will show up this year. I have plenty of the BA and no F22s.
90 degrees, is that all? When I went to AZ and stood outside of Nellis for a few hours in full sun it was 112. Beautiful planes at Nellis.

"But that was a dry heat."

I could have stay a bit more, but with not knowing how long it would be before the WWII planes went up, I thought "screw it" and went home. As usual, my timing sucks.

Return it and buy it from Adorama. Put it in your cart and see what the price is now.

I can't because of the way I bought it. I used a bunch of Amazon gift certs, so most of my refund would be tied up with Amazon.

I'll live with it. I'm still happy with the lens.

Gift certs are better than ramen...
Now that you are equipped, there is always next year but you have to go a few hundred miles. Practice shooting cars on the freeway/highway.

nice Mark... a little high on the contrast though.

I'm hitting up the Cleveland National Air Show next Monday. I got some nice, reserved seats up front for an unobstructed view.

What lens(es) do you recommend I take with me? I'm thinking the 100-400mm for sure.

Longer is better. Mine were all serious crops. If you have a lens that will help fill the frame better, take it. I would think the 100-400 would work well. I'm sure the Cleveland show will have more and better acts. The local show here was pretty lame in that regard.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing the Blue Angels in action, as well as many other acts.

haha... well... the battery costs $170, so that's not gonna happen.

I should be good to go for around 3000 shots on my single battery though.

Mark,
How about some light pastels instead?Earthy tones?
Chewy
If you don't use IS.
Have you been to an airshow with the BA/F18/F22? Some familiarization with the show is necessary and they should be doing the practice runs on Thurs/Friday.
Keep your speed really high or you will get garbage.

I'll be using IS and maybe a monopod (assuming they allow that). Yeah, I'm basically going to learn while I'm there. Unfortunately, I won't have time to go the other days (Browns game and work).

A monopod is almost useless,almost.
Have you been to a show before?

nope, first time Kevin. I've been reading some posts on various forums. You are right, a monopod is essentially useless.

Think of it as a counter-balance, or maybe a keel. It won't spend much time resting on the ground, though. Just watch out for your neighbors as you swing it around when the Blue Angels pass by.
