July AUTOMOBILE MAG lusting after the PORSCHE GT3

I read an Article in the July 09 Automobile Mag on the new Porsche GT3 last night.... in a nutshell it talks all about the fact that it is such an awesome car porsche "has not lost it's way".

They boast and brag of it's virtues....

Ability to be driven on the track!

A 435hp engine that can rev to 8500rpm's!

Engine output over 100hp per liter! Has variable valve timing!

The GT3 needs to be revved to extract its full firepower!

It has a "real" 6 speed manual Getrag transmission... and the editor "applauds Porsche's engineers for that decision" !

Shift effort is high because the transmission is "durable".

Brakes are 15" up front, 13.8 inches in back!

"This 911 really isn't about it's 0-60 time".

"The GT3 is, plainly put, the most successful marriage of racetrack prowess, road-going pleasure, and, yes luxury in the Automotive world".

Price: $113,150.

Not for nothing, but if you look at those numbers and read the entire article, it sounds like Porsche has managed to build us a car that is remarkably similar to our M3 and is able to do so for merely TWICE the price.

I say we write letters to the editor of Automobile mag and zing him a little. Anyone with me?

Yep... real similar.

Try to keep up with one on a track (with a comparable driver) and you will be shocked how quickly you are lapped.

The GT3 is an phenomenal track weapon. The M3 is a really nice car.

Day & Night difference.

I love my M3 but the GT3 is in a different league.

Completely different cars designed for different purposes. No comparison.

GT3 even the 996 are monsters. A normal M3 can not keep up unless you do some significant changes to the M3
I can keep up with the drivers but not the car. Be it two pros there is no similarities at all.
I absolutely love the new GT3 and am thinking of picking one up after the M3 a year or two down the road

The 997 GT3 Mk2 is in a different league to the E92 M3.

There's no comparison between the 2, not on the road and certainly not on the track. Hell, even the 997 Mk2 Carrera S is more than a match to the M3.

997 GT3s have been dominant on track around the world this year beating F430s, whereas E92 M3s are struggling to secure their 1st win.

One side comment: Article says Porsche has a 'Getrag' tranny. I've never read or heard who makes the M3 tranny. Does anybody know? Thx.

And no, the GT3 can't be compared to the M3 overall, but I think the OP was referring to the engines, which both have similar power, redline, variable valve timing... and 6MT. And he's probably right. Good day.

Another case where simple numbers cannot tell the whole story.

Actually, 3075lb/435hp vs 3700lb/414hp says a lot. Sure that's not the whole story, but it is a critical part of it...

Why are they similar because one makes 414 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque from a 4.0 liter 8 and the other 435 hp and 317 lb./ft of torque from a 3.8 liter 6. One gets an average of 16 miles per gallon while the other will likely top that by 3-4 miles per gallon.

Yes, both share similar redlines, have variable valve timing and six speed manual gear boxes. The P car, however, has 15" floating front rotors w/aluminum hubs and six piston calipers, and a $50k racing engine with Ti rods, hollow camshafts and seven oil pumps (the list goes on, of course) feeding a pure bred, dry sump racing engine with an equally impressive gear box and weighing in at over 525 lbs less.

0-100 mph in 8.2 vs. 10.5 or so for the M, yeah, very, very similar.

The one thing that I will agree with the OP, is that Porsche is capable of doing this for the price they did.

PLEASE dont compare an m3 to a gt3...

a gt3 is in a league of its own.....

a gt3 will rip an m3 a new hole in every aspect expect driver comfort.

Ive driven an 08 gt3 and the thing pulls very extremely hard..... way way harder then my buddies 09 m3 ive driven.

Its light and 420hp or whatever it has puts it in a very similar weight/hp league as a porsche turbo.

420hp/3000 pounds
480hp/3400 pounds

Car handles so amazingly and brakes so good, you have a hard time driving it.

gt3 will be the next car i own....so sick....

the 2010 is really growing on me also.

Where did this American habit of manufacturers calling a car released in 2009 the 2010 model? It doesn't happen anywhere else I can find.
Something I've always wondered?

Probably because in this case if you try to buy one you will probably get it next year!

Unless I purchase the next generation M3, That will be my next car. Dont get me wrong, the GT3 will most likely still be better then the next M3, but after driving this one i want to b loyal to the M. But if I do get away from the M im only getting into a gt3

The GT3 is amazing on the track and short distances, but I had the misfortune of *riding in one for *only 3 hours* and my back was getting stiff. The GT3 RS is still my dream track car.

I could have swore that there was a thread where many M3 drivers put it on a weigh station and it came out under 3400 pounds.

Back to the thread : I do agree with everyone that the GT3 is in a different class. Hell ... the new Carrera S with PDK is above the M3 and the GT3 is above that . Mind you I would rather have the Carrera S as a daily driver over the GT3. GT3 is a track car for the street.

The GT3 can very easily be used as a dd, especially the generation 2 with a refined suspension (more of a disparity between normal and sport mode than the previous gen.) and an engine with more mid-range punch.

If you have ever driven a 997 GT3 then you know it is ludicrous to compare it to an M3. GT3 wins hard in every performance category.
