ACM OEM Exhaust Mod

I know there are a few threads on this, however here is my write up as I just had the exhaust mod done this weekend...

I went up to Auto Couture Motoring in Fair Lawn, NJ this weekend to have their OEM ACM exhaust mod installed. Before, my M3 was a bit subdued, needed lots of throttle to really scream and was very reserved.

Now... it's a complete hot rod! I LOVE it! Who would have thought that an OEM M3 muffler just needed a little adjustment to sound like the monster it is.

My buddy just sold his E46 and is looking to jump into an E90 so he came along for a ride, brought his GOPRO and we got some before and after video. Before making the plunge he wanted to see the before and after sound.

On the way up I unfortunately got carried away listening to the OEM exhaust and got pulled over doing a bit over the limit. Was unintentional as we were trying to hear the exhaust through an overpass. Must say it's the best stroke of luck i've ever had with an officer. Young guy and was very polite. He wanted to know what the hurry was and I was honest that we weren't and were just listening to the exhaust and went a little too fast. Going 28 over the limit I walked away with a Careless Driving ticket instead of 1. Getting my car impounded and 2. Getting a speeding ticket. Props to the officer for being understanding as it was a mistake and I have a clean record. He smiled and said it's a nice day, that I have a nice car and to just slow it down.

Major thumbs up

ACM had the replacement setup all ready for install so the whole swap took about 30 minutes.

Few other members met up at ACM also to check everything out. Overall great turn out and the lot was full of beautiful M3s!

Great meeting everyone and look forward to hearing Knicks with the ACM mod next! Thanks to Jason for taking all the video!

Nice car, not feeling the OEM exhaust though but that's just me. Enjoy it

I still don't get why guys don't just run muffler delete pipes and custom tips. It's way cheaper, same exact sound, looks better, and weighs a ton less

So to be clear which exact exhaust mod is this? 4 pipe replacement or 2 larger holed pipe replacement. There is one more I believe which is going straight thru muffler but that would do the same thing as replacing all four pipes with solid pipes anyway.

I believe this is the straight through design that bypasses the center chambers..interested to hear from the OP about drone though as Im pretty sure any straight pipe setup would

I have a set of straight pipes (not mounted as I have a Gintani Race too) but it really doesn't drone. It's def loud, but the noise is behind the car. My gintani is way louder in the car and the drone around low rpm is awful.

Anyone in the bay area with the ACM style exhaust mod? I'd like to meet up and compare with my perforated pipe replacement mod.

PM me if interested. Thanks!

I'm looking to do the OEM Mod plus primary cat delete with resonators to get more hp. What does ACM recommend for this setup?

I might pair mine with a catless x pipe or do the test pipes from ACM.. Catless x pipe will definitely give more power

I heard going catless with the OEM mod = lots of rasp and drone.

Sounds good!

I haven't really been following.. are there any links on what this 'mod' does?

I assume it's opening the stock exhaust up, making some changes inside, and then welding back together?

^ That's exactly what it is Mike...there are some pictures of it farther up the thread...they yank out some of the sound deadening material and weld it back together. It sounds really good IMO. But, we haven't heard how the drone is yet....Not a bad option though for folks that like the stock look, but want some volume.

Hey Mike,

I have a similar mod, too, which sounds great. The muffler was opened, replaced perforated pipes by closed ones apart from a very short piece which was left perforated. Sound dampening material is still there and the Hemholtz chambers still work (reducing drone, there is none at all).

Sound is only a bit louder on the inside but way louder on the outside and it sounds great. Turning heads even at the Nürburgring where people are used to hear loud cars .

Idle during cold start is 94db(A), idle with warm engine 74 db(A) and full acceleration (on dyno) is 116 db(A). Measured at 45 deg angle, 1m distance to exhaust tips.

Clifton, cop was very cool. Young guy who I think just 'understood'

I may go for the xpipe, but I don't want catless as I want to pass emissions. I would want race cats.

You would have to contact ACM, i believe there is another thread with the entire breakdown of the mod that has pictures and shows what they do. Have to search for OEM exhaust mod.

That's actually a different mod. ACM's exhaust mod bypasses the central kidneys so the pipes essentially go straight through. You can see this in the welds. This gives the exhaust a more aggressive sound than the mod you mentioned - I've had it done as well and love the sound.

Sounds really good. Just out of curiosity, did you consider the other oem exhaust mod (4 perforated pipes)? I'm torn between the two and would really like your opinion.

I think the ACM sound is what I want 70% of the time, but scared it's too loud the 30%. How is it with windows up?

Thanks for the most comprehensive review yet btw

Honestly this is amazing. I can't say enough good things about it. Even with the windows up you hear it and actually feel it. But it's not deafening, it's just right. The perforated pipes from what I remember is not a good idea. I believe it gives you drone. However you should contact the guys at ACM to get the full details since they do the mod. Cold start up is incredible, when driving any touch of the pedal gives you a nice rumble and bass exhaust tone. Zero drone!

Not a good idea? Lol
I opted for the perforated 2 pipes replacement method and absolutely love it. Most guys who chose the same method will agree with me when I say drone is non existent.
I heard ACM mod in person a few days ago. While its louder than perforated, it sounds a bit raspy to me. kthnxbye
