M3 comp pack

Gentlemen I just drove an m3 coupe with the comp package around the track then drove my 2011 m3 coupe around the track and I just didnt notice a difference. My lap times were the same; 3 on each and the handling was the same. I am wondering how you guys felt about the comp pack. In my humble opinion I think its absolutely pointless unless I am missing something. Mind you I am not professional driver just like going Yo the track to have some fun and let go of some stress. Thanks in advance for any feedback

Did you activate stiffer suspension settings? That's essentially the difference along with being a bit lower stock-to-stock.

Curious-did you try different settings and also compare the difference in the traction control? DSC supposedly is different and allows for more slip - of course differences in tires between two cars can have an effect on performance/ feel

Were the cars otherwise the same?

I'm sure none of us amateurs will be able to tell the difference between ZCP cars and non-ZCP cars on the track, becuase we are not even good enough to get everything out of a non-ZCP car.

Cheers,

I have had two identical M3's. Only difference, one was an '08 and the other a '11 with ZCP. Both were identical in every other option and body style.

During my initial drive, I believe I felt a difference where the '11 had an advantage in:

1. DCT smoothness and speed of shifting.
2. Suspension was "slightly" stiffer on the highest setting.

I tracked both vehicles and my skill is not at a level where I can detect a difference. I did not keep lap times so I have nothing to compare.

You mean all the hype and it makes no difference in feel or lap times? I'm shocked. Here I thought 10mm lowering springs and slightly tweaked MDM would transform the car.

On a serious note, thanks for reporting your findings!

I don't recall there being any performance claims with the ZCP.

Many of us that went that route did so, because the 359M wheels and the lowered ride height, were worth the extra $2275. So no...not absolutely pointless to some.

It is likely that the average person could not notice the difference in suspension or EDC/MDM factory modifications.

However, the ZCP wheels themselves IMO are the most important part of the equation. They are lighter and stronger than the 19" pre-ZCP wheel. Also, they look so good that you don't need aftermarket wheels.

Additionally, if you look at the preowned E46 private party market and compare 06 ZCP vs. non there is a definite value added.

I personally think that M should have added some colors and made them ZCP specific like Interlagos was with the E46.

I have ZCP and for me I love the wheels that alone was what got me.
Although I think BMW could have done a better job ie: added the BMW performance exhaust as park of the ZCP package, even if they increased the priced by 1500. I personally am a novice driver and havent even pushed the car hard enought to have MDM kick in.
just my 2cent

Oh boy...the amount of incorrect information on these forums makes me nuts.

The 359M ZCP wheels are gravity cast, and heavier than the Stronger Forged 220M wheels. However the 359M ZCP wheels are .5" wider.

Added value, most people on these forums don't know the difference between ZCP and Non-ZCP, let alone the average buyer.

They aren't stronger. 359M is cast, not forged like the 220m and the 359m is heavier. But I prefer the look of the ZCPs. Where the heck did you get your info anyways lol

You are but it isn't necessarily obvious: ZCP is not strictly a performance option, despite the name "Competition Package". It does provide the car with a slightly the lower ride, slightly wider stance, active Sport EDC mode, and more forgiving MDM mode. And thus it may, under the right circumstances with the right driver, yield some measurable performance improvement. But it is not going to transform the car like aftermarket brakes, coil overs, and DOT racing tires would, for example.

ZCP is perfect for you. But then so is the basic car without it. If you don't have any particular affinity for the ZCP-equipped car, either aesthetically or otherwise, then just skip it.

My car has the comp package so it MUST be faster and handle better and I dont care what kind of "facts" you throw at me. Do you honestly think any of us would order that package if it didnt?? Come on. Once I added CF, WOW!

No I already got my M3 coupe like 2 months ago without zcp. I love the upgraded wheels better then the zcp wheels. I think it gives the car the classic m3 look just my opinion

I like the style of the wheels. That is about it.

Considering the options when building it as a new car, it's really not that much more money (if you were going to get the 220M wheels and EDC anyway).

Couldn't agree more...I will never be enough driver to wring-out this cars true capabilities...But I enjoy the attributes on the ZCP none-the-less.
