Sedan: Megan Racing Exhaust - Review [PICTURES & VIDEOS]
[PICTURES & VIDEOS BELOW]
After a long wait for the factory sedan exhaust it's finally in production. I got mine as one of the first that were imported. You'll be able to buy them very very soon. Sounds great, very little drone, and very inexpensive. It fits perfect and is everything you'd expect from a performance exhaust. Fully bolt on, no cutting, all clamps included. just plug & play. I have mine paired up with a primary cat delete (test pipes) it sounds freaking great. very deep strong tone coming from the rear. If you're looking for a performance exhaust under a budget look no further you've found it. Previously had the coupe version of this exhaust modified and it worked fine. sold it a few weeks ago Update - Talk to James @ Megan Racing Inc (626) 581-0988 Beginning production as early as next week, expected around early October. paired stock with megan with x.pipes exhaust + primary catdelete

I Love it!. Great choice. I have the same exhaust with a fabspeed x-pipe with on my coupe. I am getting ready to do the primary cat delete with a custom TopSpeed tuning dyno tune, pulley and intake. Cant wait but my neighbors dont see to share my enthusiasm as they piss and moan about how loud it is.
Here's a vid of mine I just shot with my D5000. Its a cold start and I think it might have little to loud for the camera's mic. Last edited by davmanm5; 09-10-2011 at 10:30 AM.. |

It's insane how much cheaper this exhaust is compared to other ones. I wonder if it negatively impacts performance... it doesn't sound bad. No drone for sure?

It does drone at low RPM, 3000+/-, at least on mine. as far as cost, I am doing primary back(primary cate delete, x-pipe secondary cat delete and exhaust) with a custom dyno tune for less than some are selling just an exhaust. ie Akra, Eisenmann, AP Racing. etc. ITs ridiculous. what some people are willing to pay just to say they have a Akra or other etc exhaust. The Megan Racing is an EXACT, and I mean EXACT match of the AP Racing in weight, shape and quality. The only issue is getting one in the U.S. as apparently they are in very short supply. The only thing I did different was have the exhaust welded as opposed to clamped as clamping it leads to leaks etc.
I did not do a before and after dyno but I as well as other that have been in my car can definitely notice the difference. I'll see if I can get a friend to video of a fly by with the x-pipe and exhaust. |

I test drove an '09 M3 coupe with the Megan exhaust and thought it sounded fantastic. I didn't hear any drone whatsoever in any rpm range (probably wasn't really listening for it ???). Love the sound on the throttle blips. Will be my first mod when I pick up my M3.

I mean is the welding just an issue with this exhaust? Or in general? |

I have the Megan Exhaust on my E92 M3 and I found the quality to be excellent. The welds look beautiful and as far as the clamps are concerned I don't see any leak happening as they mated up perfectly. As far as drone, maybe a touch around the 2400rpm level, but it was minimum. A lot less than what I expected.
My car currently has the Turner Test Pipes on the car with the remainder of the stock xpipe. The car is quite aggressive but it could be a tad more if I had my way. I am just so used to my 997S with AWE 200cpi cats and Borlas along with X51 headers. My 997S was insanely loud... As far as any hp loss I highly doubt it..the bends are smooth and they are really just 2 straight through mufflers mated together. A great deal for $500 (what I paid). Dave

In general I would weld any exhaust short of a full Ti or Inconel exhaust just because you will not likely find a shop that can do it right.

I mean look at other brands..you can get a full exhaust system for a 2011+ Mustang 5.0L. You can get long tube headers, high flow metallic cats along with a full cat back system for $1500. All high quality stainless with mandrel bends. I didn't want to go the expensive route and felt the Megan exhaust is right where a cat back should cost. This along with the Turner Test Pipes is the smart way to go imho. If you want to throw money at the car you can do it, but at least there is now a cost effective way of doing this. Dave

Anyone in Dallas have a Megan exhaust? Wondering if I could get a local ride-along to check out the drone....
That's a seriously good deal. Unbelievable. Anyone else have comments on the drone? If I knew it didn't drone much I'd be all over this. Otherwise I'm stuck saving for an overpriced Dinan exhaust.... Parker |

I've heard this exhaust on DaveS0997's car (E92 M3, comp pack). Was genuinly surprised with the sound and price. Doesn't sound as good as the Akra, but for the price/value point I think you would have a hard time beating it!

See here I think you are dead wrong. I dont think the Akra sounds that good at all. I think you are one if those that are blinded by the name. I shopped mine for several months looking at various videos, talking to some local tuners, cars shows etc and they ll said the same thing.....a fool and his money are soon parted. There are many manufacturers that make or reproduce the same piece for a whole lot less money and they are identical in build quality, sound etc as the named brand. I truly hate spending money on something as stupid as a name welded to the same metal can that is the next guy. When I tell people what I have and more importantly what I paid they are flabbergasted! I simply tell them that just because its an M dosent mean you have to be a fool and take it in the ass just because they tell you that you need to. The arrogance of some of these aftermarket manufacturers is amazing quite frankly in that respect.

^ I wouldn't be so quick to assume that becuase someone else likes the tone and sound of a different exhaust system, that they are blinded by the name brand of that system.
You're happy with your system, and others are happy with the system they've purchased, albeit at a much higher price. It's not your place (nor Wall$street's) as to whether those individuals are fools. Some might say that about all of us that have M3s, and not 5.0 GTs, or Camaros, or another car. Give it a rest. You like the Megan exhaust, and it's less than half the price of the more common ones mentioned here. We get it. Glad you like it, perhaps I'll like it enough to buy one too, perhaps I won't. But I'm not going to assume that those that bought and Akra, Eisenmann, or similar are fools either. |

I'm not blinded by the name or the price. You are making unfounded assumptions. Obviously you haven't seen the Akra close up. It's a masterpiece, there is no doubt about it. The only qualm I have with it is the H pipe which causes the "dip" between 1800 and 2400 rpm, which can be cured to some extent with software. I don't know what "local tuners" you've been talking too. Maybe you care to share? Don't think for one second that the build quality of the Megan exhaust is on par with that of the Akra. The akra is a deeper, throatier tone. Sound is subjective anyway so there is no point in arguing about it.

This thread shouldn't degenerate to name calling, I for one think the Akra is a piece of art. However, no way would I spend the money for it though. I for one find the Akra to tame, even the Megan with the Turner Test Pipes and the remainder of the oem xpipe is a tad to tame...needs a little more rawness. Its to smooth...
I am happy for the amount of money I spent. I want to hear the new Borla ATAK muffler when its out for the M3 with the TTPs. Dave

I got one too.
Quick review:
1.) It sounds bad ass. (people always asking me about it) 2.) It drones like crazy below 3k in 6th or 7th unless going downhill. 3.) Filliment was good, but mine leaked and was missing two nuts at first. 4.) Cant beat it for 500 bucks. 5.) While better than stock, he tips are cheap looking. I plan to replace mine asap. Ive had a megan exhaust before and it turned brown within 6 months. So I expect this one will as well. But for 500 bucks, you cant beat it. -D |
