That is not entirely true, thinner oil will flow more and take more heat away. In most engines with more sensible clearance numbers it wouldn't be a non issue, but, with the tight oil and side clearances on the S65 thinner oil may be your friend even at operating temps.

Thinner oil will also break down and degrade under heat faster, so then you protection goes with it. At operating temp there is nothing wrong with using the a thicker oil how ever in this case we are not talking about going up in weight or viscosity. it's not like we are talking about using 20w 60 in stead of 10w60. luqi moly is a 10w60 oil just like castro and now shell that is used by BMW. My e46 and c63 both saw cooler temps right off back as well as smoother idle noise.

On the Oil temperature gauge, what would be a normal running temperature?

Regards

Actualy good , same thing here it depends also from the weather temps outside . (Summer-Winter )
Depends also of what kind/type/spec oil that you are running..
And once you can read the oil level with the dig. reader you are good to go !

The gauge is more for illustrative purposes at best and SHOULD NOT EVER BE USED as a "real" reference.

I personally know of one car (e9x m3) that was making alot of noise with LubroMoly oil and once swtiched quieted down alot. Use what you will, but I have heard good + bad re: the Lubro stuff.

Anyone try a mix for track days? Thinner so the motor doesn't starve coupled with a bump in flash point?
