There is some funny shit in this thread...It really goes to show the world is getting dumber. Why would anybody buy an M3 and not ever rev it past 5k? That is the dumbest waste of money ever. It just shows that people buy these cars and have no idea what they are or the real reason to own them.

After the variable tach raises all the way, and I am at 210 degrees, I always run it up at least once to redline and let it come back down naturally while in gear(1st and 2nd). I like to let it breathe. other than that, I generally shift at the yellow (when engaged in spirited driving).

I drove a '96 Cobra daily for about 140K, and followed the above guidelines. It was run to the rev limiter several times every day it wasn't raining, some when it was! Never a hiccup, and as tight and good when sold as the day I got it.

Absent design flaws or isolated failures, there is no WAY I'm going to have LESS confidence in the M3 under the same conditions.

Some of you guys worry way too much.

Gee Wally, was my post really retarded? I figured based on the other posts that my self imposed rev limit was way too conservative but was looking for a factual explanation. I seem to have that "everything has only so many clicks" mentality sometimes. I figured the more revs, heat, friction the more likely I'll have repairs in the future.

That being said if I'm wrong I can certainly admit it and enjoy the car more.

If the M3 was designed to be like a race car and rev to 8400, why doesn't everyone track their cars? At the track you could go as fast as you dare, corner as hard as you dare, and redline all day long. "That's what the car was built for". If not, why bother buying an M3. You can't go 160 mph in the US on public roads; 3rd gear at 8400 rpms puts you over 100 mph and a suspended license; and you certainly don't need 414 hp to merge on to a crowded freeway that's moving 50 mph in the right lane and 40 mph in the left (fast) lane.

Probably because not everyone has the time to do that, and not everyone wants to live with the increased wear the track puts on the brake pads and tires. For some people using the M3 at reasonably legal speeds on the street is enough of an adrenaline rush to keep them happy.

Also, just about every car on the market can go over 100mph, and that's still overkill. And even 200hp is more than enough to merge with traffic. So never mind an M3 - why doesn't everyone just drive 4 cyl Camry? It's all anyone really needs.

Finally, in my case anyway, the tracks local to me probably wouldn't even be fast enough to let me get to redline in fourth gear anyway. So instead of getting to redline in 1st through 3rd gear, I just get to do it in 1st and 2nd. I can live with that.

I've already used your argument above to convince myself to move to more practical cars in the future. In the real world (not a racetrack) there are lots of other cars that are easier to get from A to B quickly in. As much of a pig as my RS6 was on the track, it was much easier to drive fast on the street than my e46 M3. On back roads that aren't as well maintained, the compliance of the 328i suspension is superior to that in the M3 for going fast. There are plenty of other examples.

With rev-limiter removed or disabled, I bet S65 engines can easily rev to 10,000 rpm. Oh how I wish I had my own team of mechanics who'll rebuild the engine every time I come home.

With an engine like that, I'd think occasional or frequent revs to 8,300 rpm is aight.
