18ppm is still pretty high, definitely wouldn't go that long of an interval.

And he said he switched to 0W40 after, to bring the lead down.

Adding my latest report. ~10k mile interval, moved onto Mobil 1 0W-40 now. 10W-60 during the Polar Vortex (-25°F some mornings) did not warm up very quickly...

Adding my report is just got in. Little info: My car had 75500 miles at the time of change. I took oil from the middle of the drain on the rear drain hole. The car was driven a few miles since I had to empty out the oil catch can of oil from another change at the Oreilys near my house.

Just got my oil report today! I just switched to Mobil1 0W40, so hopefully my lead content will go down.

I fully expect it will. Keep the interval on the shorter side and see what happens. Good luck!

Here's my first report for my 08 M3. Just passed 50,000 miles. I'm the second owner and have put about 12,000 of those miles on myself.

Ran Castrol 10W-60 for approximately 7,000 miles for this report. I had 1 track day, with about 1 qt of 10W-60 and .5 qt of Castrol 0W-40 to top off during this interval. Everything looks okay. Lead is probably something to keep an eye on for me, as I'm a little above the average.

Here is my third report. Don't think I have the bearings with lead, but the aluminum seems to be relatively consistent

Here's mine. Interval was actually 8k miles not the 4,700 that appears on this report. Was happy to see the low lead levels. Should I be concerned about the high iron levels?

Rupes, looks like you ran the "newer" 10W60 Edge Professional, and judge by the few reports I have seen, lead/copper wear are generally lower vs. the older TWS formulation.

I don't know why you have higher than avg. wear when it comes to alum and iron, did you do any track days? Did you drive the car particular hard?

I bought it used, so not sure how it was treated. I guess I just need to keep my eye on it.

Should one be encouraged by a wear element decreasing when the mileage and oil are both changed compared to a baseline? This is a classic changing of too many factors to determine what is causing the change. In general wear elements, if being created on any sort of regular basis, will increase constantly with mileage.

I've had the car for the past 6k miles. It had 10-60w in it until I got it and then I changed over to 0-40w. I sample taken was the first run with 0-40w. 90% of my driving is highway miles and I'm usually anywhere between 60-90mph. Car has a pretty easy life I'd say. That may change soon.

You can still measure if wear metals are decreasing over a specified period If you used one oil and changed every 8k miles and then switch to another oil and change every 4k miles you can still see a trend and compare.

i.e. if you change TWS at 8k miles with a lead reading of 15ppm, switch to M1 and change every 4k miles with each lead reading being 2ppm I would say its obvious that wear metals decreased.

I know you are very academic about everything but you may be over thinking this one.

Forgot to post my report up. This was at an approximately 10k mile oil change interval.
Ran a few track days along with the occasional redline run.

Thoughts?

Just got back results from my oil analysis. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results on a 100,000km engine. Note that the mileage is all in km. So i had about 5,000mi on the 10W60 with 1L added.

I had one track day from last summer and on top of that, car was parked outside and driven daily for the last 2 months in brutal Canadian winter

If you are going to stick to 10W60, start lowering your intervals. Lead is a little too high for me. But I'd wait until second report just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

That was my plan. I usually change the oil every 7,500 but didn't have time to change it, which is why it was a longer interval.
Thanks

Hey Mark,

I switched to 0w40 and I like the way it drives over the TWS oil. Revs faster, better gas mileage too. Never did a oil analysis on it though.

This is not an "academic" concern. It is fundamental to observation of data and conclusions about such - so I don't really agree. With a simultaneous oil brand/weight switch and mileage interval switch one can't separate which caused the change.

Now, given the specifics of your hypothetical case, which is totally different from that to which I originally replied to, I do agree seeing those changes one could make a reasonable conclusion that the oil was making a difference.
