Wrong, otherwise you wouldn't already have 414hp out of a 4.0L engine.

Isn't an electric turbo a supercharger?
....

It's run by a pulley...powered by electricity?

This is interesting, but it raises more questions than it answers. I suppose the third turbo has to be electric powered because there is no place to put it once two turbos are there. It is going to be a trick to get that turbo up to high RPM with an electric motor. Come to think of it, if the compressor is not driven by exhaust gas, it is not a turbo. It's a supercharger. Combining superchargers with turbos has been used for a long time on large diesel engines, usually 2 stroke.

The supercharger would be for low revs. The turbos would kick in later. Not sure why it's necessary when the current turbo engines already have boost/torque by 1,500 RPM.
Why not just do a sequential pair of turbos like BMW does with their diesel engines?

The engine in the X3/M3 will be a first and show the technical and engineering prowness of the M Division.

M has to progress and has to advance it cannot continuosly live in the past
to do so would forgoe some interesting opportunities. Sorry, but emissions and legislation means there is no going back.

Truth is M is more popular than before , It used to be in the background, an underground entity if you will. But now it is more mainstream and commercially viable - That is progress. Something which could not be denied.

The philosophy, however is still to create the leading individual performance machines for enthusiasts. But there is no denying that these cars are considered ,especially in the BRIC markets of Brazil,Russia,India and China as status symbols and this is where growth is coming from.

BMW needs a new CSL or GTS line. Porsche has the RS, MB the Black series, and Audi the RS line. BMW is falling behind in this respect.

It is was I said quite some time ago, the M3 F3X is getting a 3.3l V6 derived from the 4.4l V8. The tripple turbo setup is not for power or torque only. It is to have power at high revs, 8.000 RPM and torque from 1.000-8.000 RPM so to say, without turbo lag and instant throttle response. If the 3.3l is correct, it is a V6, the I6 N55 would get to thin side walls if bored, and to long stroke and low piston speed for high revs if stroked. The sound of this engine will be unique, not only for a BMW but also for a V6.

Also, when SCOTT talk about the engine he only says "6 cylinders" but never weather Inline or Vee.

Not really their goal. BMW wants to be able to meet CAFE standards. The RS lines and Black Series line both significantly hurt the fleet average on MB's cars. They have to pay thousands of dollars of fines. This isn't very logical in the long run.

people said the same thing when they started the gas guzzler tax
And in Europe they still charge by the co2 output
But sales of larger engined models are still strong
BMW can just pass on the cost to the consumer
I dont think any of us minded the $1300 gas guzzler

" Blasphemy"

"This is why this is my last M3"

"BMW is ruining the M Division"

All the stuff I remember hearing when the E46 was being phased-in and then again when it was phased-out for the E9X's.....

I have faith the next gen M3 will be another tremendous achievement in performance and experience. It's their iconic, crown jewel - they know they can't f*** it up....

The sustainable assets are a nice to have...We're going to eventually see $5/gallon gas in this country.

The electric turbo/charger will likely be used for low revs whereas the (bigger) conventional turbos will take care of the higher engine speed range. The question remaining is whether Valvetronic will be used or not.

Best regards,
south

I think it will, as the new M5 F10 has, eventhough the X5/X6 M, on whose engine it is based dosn't have Valvetronic.

I find it surprising that in the initial post it was said F30/F32 - as if there were still plans for an M3 sedan.

That would be good news and would put me in the market for the next M3.

I really don't care how fast the car will be in a straightline. I just hope that they bring the car's awesome engine sound back from the E46. The V8 isn't really for the M3 imo.

M3 = I6
M5 = V8
M6 = V10/12

As long as they make it good looking, lighter, more nimble, faster, and better in gas mileage. I am all for it.

I heard a lot of people say that 1M will not sound good like E46 M3. But I have heard it in person with stock exhaust and it sounds as great. It might not have the high pitch F-1 like shriek that current M3 or last generation M5/M6 have at higher rpms with much larger displacement. But none the less it sounds pretty good.

Anyways, to me the best sound is of super bikes with 1000cc engines revving sky high. BMW even made formula one 4 cylinder turbo engines and they sound pretty damn good. I do hope that they work a bit to extract pleasurable notes out of the new M3 engine.

I wonder why they don't give us a performance oriented hybrid like the F1 cars. Porsche is already far along on this path. Electric motors give instant torque from zero RPM and the energy saved from braking is "free".

Triple Turbo? SKIP. The engine will be a maintenance nightmare. BMW is losing the plot very quickly these days...
