I suggest getting a E60 M5, the E90 would be too small for teenagers.
It was also affected by the rising gas prices a couple years back. I routinely averaged around 10MPG in my M5. I took a bath when I traded it in after only having it a few years. I'm waiting this time around to see what happens with the new one, I predict they'll drop hard after the initial excitement is over and there are plenty out there. They also refused to CPO the last M5's which hurt resale.

d is the operative letter in the equation. I will be going for a 335d once my kid gets a bit older. E92 isn't that bad with an infant (don't really use it that often, I got a Land Cruiser for that) but once I get more of the M out of my system I am gonna be looking at the 335d. I drove one as a loaner, and that 400+ torques really wakes that thing up, and you get 25+ MPG to boot! I wouldn't auto cross it, but I also wouldn't really think of autoxing my E92, tried it in my E46 and got beat up by lighter jap stuff...

Drove a 335d loaner. Not impressed at all. If it had a manual it would be better.

Might have lots of torque. I didn't feel it and I drove like I stole it.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic? My budy averaged like 16mpg's in his Evo XIII. He did drive it like it was stolen 100% of the time, but that's about what I get in my M3 and in my old 335i (modded)

For autocrossing look into a track purpose car (something small and cheap that will give you tons of fun). You're asking for too much - family hauler, good mileage and autocrossing under $50k.
OP location? US? Europe? 530d might not be an option. I mean everything he put as an option has advantages and disadvantages. Maybe get a nice family sedan, and try to pick up an older evo, or evne a subaru wrx it doesnt have to be an sti. Mods will make it fast enough.

But Im not one for owning a turbo car and autocross, Id rather have an NA car for those hot days!

i think you got it right. op you need a sti or evo...that will best suit you and you will be able to afford to own one new most likely when the time comes. not trying to be mean to op but i find these types of threads pointless because there are always cars in the equation that just dont make sense. a m3, m5, 550i? regardless of your situations it just goes to show you havent done your hw in what you really need with that line up of cars

No doubt the E90 M3. Kids will be fine in it until they're much older. There's not contest in an AX between the 3 and the 5. The 3 is much more tossable.
