Got owned by a massive pothole

Fuuuuuuu....

Ok...so yesterday I'm tooling around and out of nowhere, there's this crater sized pothole that goes all the way across the road. Long story short, I hit it going about 50 and immediately after the steering wheel was shaking and it looked like my alignment was way off. Steering wheel is sitting slightly to the right when I'm going straight.

I get home and took the front wheels off to see if they're bent. Front driver wheel is OK but I have a pretty huge bubble on the tire. Passenger front wheel is owned. The inside of the rim is severely bent.

I have my car going in tomorrow to get this all fixed but need to know what else could have been damaged so I can have them look at everything.

Here are some pics...sadface...

Since M3s are notorious for being picky about wheels being true and road force balanced - I suggest you replace any wheel and tire that is not perfect. Since the steering wheel is slightly off to the right, it looks as if other suspension parts will need to be replaced.

A good dealer, after you described to them what happened, will know to check the entire front and rear suspension to ensure nothing else was bent, cracked or knocked loose or out of alignment.

But if they don't, make sure they do

Cheers,

The State may pay for it. I would contact DOT and inquire......a hole that massive is not within "allowable tolerance" for sure!

Sorry to see the damage though...damn!

Yea...I'm going to ask them to look at everything. Is there anything specific that could have been damaged or is it just a shot in the dark?

I tried going through DOT a couple years back when the same thing happened in the winter. Ended up bending the 2 passenger wheels. The whole process is a complete bitch and they push back pretty hard if you don't have pics of the hole you hit. Once it gets fixed I'll head back and snap some shots. Maybe I'll take the hole going 70 this time...ehh...wat...

Bad luck, OP. Do you have wheel/tire insurance? Would come in handy now.

Yea, I actually bought it this time around. After getting screwed over on my last car when I broke those wheels, I figured it would be a worthwhile investment.

You need an alignment after replacing the wheel(s)/tire(s); that will tell you if anything else needs to be replaced, so add another $200 to the tab . Wonder if the forged 19s would have resisted that hit, although it'd have been harder due to less tire to absorb the hit. Good luck man.

Yea, I already have an alignment scheduled after they get the wheels/tires on. Sucks bad. I'm really pissy. Today is like the perfect day to go out and flog the hell out of my car and I'm stuck inside waiting for tomorrow.

Update...

So after 7 business days they finally got the front wheel and tire in. I'd just like to take a minute here to say...what the fuck? I could have ordered new wheels/tires from Tire Rack, had them mounted/balanced and shipped in like 2 days. Jesus.

Ok...where was I? Right, so they got the wheel on and slapped the car on the alignment rack. My SA called me and said they had to do a LOT of adjustment and the only thing that was off was the camber. All he said was they couldn't get it fixed and it was up to me whether I wanted to just deal with it or make an insurance claim. Yea...$70,000 car with 2k miles on it - I think I'll get it fixed.

Probably won't get my car back for 2+ weeks since they'll have to deal with the insurance company, order parts, put them on, work on the alignment again...blah blah.

Fuuuuuuuuu....

If you haven't taken photos of that pothole yet do it now! I had a friend who in a similar situation, he waited a week, and when he got out there to document the hole CalTrans was on the scene starting to patch up the crater!

Get documentation now--M3 suspension parts are not cheap! Even it it means a rental or a buddy to get you out there. 50 bucks on a rental is cheap compared to parts/labor.

So the car is fixed. Here's everything they had to do:
  • Replaced left front tire.
  • Replaced right front wheel.
  • Alignment - ended up being way off. Says my left front camber was completely hosed and couldn't be adjusted any more.
  • The tech started sniffing around and noticed the strut and knuckle were ruined so they ordered new parts.
  • Got them installed and another alignment showed everything was in the green.

Total bill would have been about $2700 but my wheel/tire insurance came through and paid for $900 (for the wheel/tire obviously). Out the door it cost me $1800 which I'll be getting a nice phatty insurance check for. I really didn't want to go through that BS with them but if the first round of replacement parts didn't fix it, it would have gotten hella expensive and my insurance company said they wouldn't have covered anything else.

BS? I dunno, whatever. Just glad the damn car is back.

And a pic when it's not getting owned by potholes.....
