My sorta guided tour of the BMW Museum in Munich.

Unfortunately on my previous trip to Germany I missed out on seeing the BMW Museum. This time, I made sure that mistake was not repeated. After spending the morning at BMW Welt and on the Plant tour I was finally off to the Museum...



The iconic global headquarters of BMW in Munich, Germany.



BMW E36 Touring spotted while crossing over the road from BMW Welt to the BMW Museum. Why exactly were these never imported to the US? Sigh...

It's a tragedy that this engine was hidden by a car. Truly a work of art.



The 2 liter I6, P54 B20 found in the E46 WTCC.*



A fairly ingenious offset intake plenum design by BMW. It makes for superlative throttle response and makes the most of the induction air that comes through the mandated restricted throttle body.*

BMW M12/M13 Formula One turbo engine. This 1.4 liter engine was said to produce ~1,300hp in qualifying trim, and that was in 1986!

The interior of the E46 M3 CLS. Unfortunately, due to the lighting and me not having a CPL filter with me, taking decent shots of the interior proved impossible. I could have pressed the lens up on the glass, but I think BMW may have frowned upon that a bit.

E21 Racecar on beautiful BBS wheels.



E30 M3 racecar on BBS wheels of course. There were no E36 M3s at the museum. *At the NY International Autoshow briefly spoke with Matt Russel (BMW M Brand Manager) and was told that two journalists wrecked both cars at the Nürburgring. Apparently the cars were running on original tires, which seemed to provide less than favorable grip on the wet track. From what I was told, one of the cars is currently being repaired, but it looks like the other is a total loss.

Sorry to jack your thread, but I went to the museum back in 2010 and while I didn't take as many incredible pics as you did, I did have the good fortune to encounter the world's only ///M8 prototype.

Wow....amazing..never see this before,the ///M8....jesus !
I think it's more than 20 years ago,i did a test drive with the 850 i,and i was surprised by the power, not like my ///M3 today, but at that time it's was amazing !
Now the ///M8....man....THX for sharing this unique pictures
BTW...was this... the 8 cyl. or the 12 cyl. engine ???

The engine is a V12 (modified S70).

Here's what Wikipedia says:

"Originally envisioned as a Ferrari competitor, only a single prototype BMW M8 was ever produced, equipped with a special version of the S70 engine, essentially a bored out version of the M70 with experimental multi-valve cylinder heads. The only prototype ever produced (one that was reportedly not even road safe) was locked away by BMW in the company's Giftschrank (poison storage).

"BMW and the M Division had strongly denied that the car was even a possibility since the initial stages of its development. A world exclusive feature in the February 2010 issue of BMW Car Magazine, however, revealed that the M8 prototype still exists in its entirety. The car was unveiled for the first time in front of journalists on July 2nd, 2010 at the BMW Museum in Munich."

I was so pumped to see it in person. I actually think it was only in the Welt museum for a couple of days before its private unveiling. I'm pretty sure it's never been back since; probably back in the poison storage room. I just was lucky enough to be there at the time.

OMG! I would have loved to see that thing in person. I wish it had gone into production. Thanks for posting the pics!
