Do these tires look worn?

Hey everyone,

Picking up a used E92 M3 and this is the condition of the tires. Looks pretty worn to me, so not sure if this is an issue to bring up and order a new set of tires. Feedback would be appreciated.

If it came from a BMW dealer then it should have way better tyres than that.
Once they are close to the wear bars then its time to change.
In any case look at Michelin PSS tyres for your next set.

It's not a bmw dealer, but carmax. I'd like to give them a proper explanation so they would be willing to switch this out. Safety issue? Compare it to another car's tire tread? How much would you say is left on them 25%?

Those are Michelin PSS tires. The tread depth on the rears (in my case 265/35/19) are not that great to begin with. I would say those are at about 50%.

The "Tyre wear indicators" are level with the rest of the tread when there is 2mm of tread depth left. Full tread is around 8 to 9 mm depending on tyre type.

Thank you. 50% is reasonable for me, as I thought they might be near worn to the bottom. How many miles could you get out of 50% with conservative driving? Any tire recommendations for the next set with balance of tread life/performance?

Buy a tread depth gauge at any auto parts store for $3. Go on tire rack or Michelin's web page (if in fact they are Michelins) and determine the tread depth new. Measure the current depth and compare. The lowest legal tread depth is 2/32. As previously mentioned, the tires have a "wear bar" between, and perpendicular to, the treads. Once the tread depth is at the wear bar they should be replaced. Michelin PS2's seem to last around 15k miles on average.

Thank you. So if it as at 2/32 it would be breaking the law to sell?

I don't know that there is any law against selling a car with bald tires. There is however a law in most states forbidding driving a car with less than 2/32 tread depth. I doubt may cops are enforcing tread depth laws but it's generally not a good idea to drive around on bald tires.

My opinion based on the picture is that the car will need new tires very soon. I would use it as a bargaining chip with the dealer.

Nope, the PSS brand new had fronts (245) with about 8-9mm. On the rears (265) they are about 6-7mm

That is very diffcult to answer as it depends on too many variables. I would safely estimate you can get another 4K miles on those.

I will raise your "Nope" with another "Nope". Michelin PSS have 10/32 new and I hope you don't have 235's on the front of your car.

OEM Michelin PS2's start with 9.5/32 in the front and 8.5/32 in the rear.

Click on "specs" in the link below. I also have set of PSS in my garage with 9/32 tread; unless the treads grew, I think they started out at 10/32... I guess anything is possible.

Sorry 245s my bad. All i can speak to is my experience, the PSS fronts have noticeably more tread depth than the rears

Not the case for PSS but there is a 1/32 difference front to rear with the PS2. You must have a very good casting eye.

Be sure to check the tread depth on the inside of the tire since there is a fair amount of negative camber with our car and it'll wear a lot more there.

Unless it rains a lot where you live, I'd run those tires for a lot longer.

Thanks. I'm in cali, so this is off a car I am looking to purchase. I'd like to see if i I have enough of an argument to get them to chip in on a new pair.
