Service Advisor: "Get cosy with your loaner, we're tearing your engine down"

I've got a 2008 with around 58k miles on it that started making a ticking noise, which increases in frequency with the RPM. After about 3k RPM you can really hear it. Not audible at idle.

Some searches here came up with an issue with the connecting rod bearings. What typically is the fix in these cases? Shop foreman had mentioned it could possibly be VANOS related when I took him for a drive, but looks like they may have progressed past that theory. A bit concerned about the motor being disassembled...

Not to be pedantic, but both are correct, my misspelling more so on the other side of the Atlantic...

Assuming the techs are competent, you should be fine. Had mine torn down at 16k miles (also bad bearings) and I have about 38k now. Been running great since. But I'm pretty sure the sound will come back as soon as my warranty ends.

Please ask them for pictures of the old bearings if they replace them.

+1, do you have an extended warranty through BMW? My 08' makes so many noises at 56k miles (the ticking is what bothers me). I've told myself not to worry about them, everyone says they are like that.

I've had good luck with United in Roswell for my 2011 X5. Pick up my M3 from the PCD next week and will PM & report back on my success later on with them.

Why is that odd? Just because you had better experiences at Global than at the other place that doesn't necessarily mean others have had the same experience as you.

Update as promised:
Well, it's not much of an update since I don't have any technical details to share. She's getting a new motor. They mentioned it was related to the rod bearings and left it at that. Mine is a very early build M3... and should now be getting the last of production M3 engines with all the learnings from the past 4 years baked in (?).

Won't have it back for a couple of weeks, and then need to do the break-in. On a another note, damn, my 335i loaner is nice. I used to have a 996 Turbo and I'm a sucker for gobs of torque. I'd like to try out a 335d sometime.
Also, thank God for CPO coverage...

Good for you. New or rebuilt motor is a huge win for an '08 owner.

What's the warranty on the new motor? Should be above and beyond your CPO specific warranty, too.

Unless its the 2014 M3 motor

To the op, good luck. I know what you mean by the gobs of torque for your 335 loaner. Sometimes it blows my mind how much fun around town my 135i can be.
