new m3 owner here MT question
I just purchased my first m3. 2011 with 26k, comp package, mt, everything else you could want. However, the syncros to me feel like something is wrong. I almost never have a smooth shift from first to second. There is a violent harsh clank when shifting into second. if I shift quick it helps a bit, but I dont think this is right. can anyone let me know what is to be expected as I am a new m3 owner and dont know if this is normal.

I also notice that when the car is completely still and you depress thw cluth all the way to the floor and then take it all the way back up the car budges a tiny bit. at the same time you xan watch the rpms move about 50-100 rpms. feels like when the the car is in nuetral the cluth grabs a bit even when not in gear. normal? thanks for any replies.

Not normal at all.
Shift into 2nd should feel a bit notchy. That is the BMW tradition and makes it near impossible to money shift since 2nd feels so distinctive. But it should not be harsh or make a "clank". If you are unable to get a smooth 1-2 while giving the car a bit of throttle into 2nd, you should get your transmission checked. My 1-2 is like butter at any RPM with proper throttle application going into 2nd. |

The gearbox is notchy..and the driveline lash is also present..you just need to practice on this gearbox..it takes some getting used to, but you will be shifting like a boss in no time..assuming ofcourse you drive know how to drive a stick

Some of the above posts have merit, but the only way to get a smooth 1-2 upshift is to shift close to redline. Shortshifting 1-2 is never smooth in the E9X M3s. I will say however, that the noise you describe does warrant an immediate trip to the dealer, or you may be sorry.

Normal.
M3 gearbox is indeed a bit notchy. Also the "non-smooth" shifting has to do with our long clutch. Are you a previous manual owner? For me, I have time to drive other popular manual cars..such as GTI or S2000. The other day I was shocked how short the clutch throw was in GTI and especially the S2000. Driving those cars, you barely have "harsh" shifting because gears engage so fast within such a short clutch throw. I'd be lying if I felt 100% comfortable getting back into the M3 and driving with this long clutch throw back again. Our M3 is a little different story. I have had similar "harshness" in 1-2gear in my M3 as well. Took it to dealer several times. checked fluid, had Dinan tech and other M techs drive the car. Everything was fine. I would say, I love driving this car above 55mph lol...under 55mph on local roads it's a bit annoying at times.

I bought my car brand new and it still does it from 1st to 2nd.
With my previous cars I always kind of forced the car into 2nd but it does make it worse over time. Rather than pushing the car into gear go a little slower and guide it. Don't know if it makes any sense

What you're describing sounds like hill assist. When you're on a slope, the car holds the brake for a few seconds or detects you are moving forward...

Hill assist works in certain conditions. If you are standing still on an uphill, and your foot is on the brake, if you shift into first, hill assit will engage. If you release your foot from the brake before engaging the clutch, hill assit will not work.

thanks for all the feedback. the car is going to the dealer on monday. I will let you know what they say. I have owned other commuter manual cars in the past and also drive a friends r32 on a regular basis which is extremely smooth. I seems this is fairly normal, but I will get it looked at regardless. Thanks for all the help.

1st to 2nd requires proper throttle application during the shift and can be accomplished with just your fingertips when done correctly. I can execute perfectly smooth and fast 1-2s at any RPM above 3000. Give it some gas when going into 2nd, you will be surprised. |

OP def get this checked out at the dealer. I can assure you that a "violent harsh clank when shifting into second" is certainly not normal.
I don't know what these people are talking about as my car shifts smoothly and with no harsh clanks. Last edited by gatorfast; 12-15-2012 at 05:06 PM.. |

i agree-my car had a slight roughness shifting into second, much less than what you're describing, and the trans was replaced under warranty. now,the shift into second is still a bit different, but overall it shifts quite smoothly.i'm going to try giving it some gas going into second on the upshift,i already do this on the downshift, this sounds like a good hint.
