STASIS S4 vs M3

The Stasis S4 Challenge package is quite stout. It costs $11,495 in addition to the price of an S4 which puts it in the same price as a stock M3. Has anyone had a chance to compare them head to head?

Looks pretty nice, and it seems you get a lot for 11,500.

If I went to an S4, I wouldnt do this though. I'd do some nice P4xsc Wheel.

Isn't this body S4 near the end of its life cycle as well? I wouldn't buy a small fast saloon now, wait a year or so.

Anyway, vs a B/O M3 this will still lose. It may match a stock M3 though.

they just facelifted it new for this model year.
i have an a6 with the same engine, its quick, and with the extra HP the stasis ECU has to bring it up 75hp......must be lighting quick
i def think it is something you should look into.

The S4 weighs 200-300 lbs more than the M3. Even with the same amount of power, it would be hard to keep up. They have the new active rear differential for better cornering... but in the real world, it doesn't handle as good.

The S4 would be a good all around street car but definitely not a track beast. I'd pick an Evo any day over the Audi for track duty. You can easily tune an Evo for 400hp for about a thousand dollars and it'll be great fun. Handling on the Evo X is the best besides the GT-R for an AWD car.

For a 4 door sport sedan, this is what I think works:
Street - S4
Street/Track - M3
Track - Evo

It's a better daily driver but nowhere near as fun as the M3 on track, even modded. AWD, heavier- less sharp of a car. STASIS is a great racing team and shop, though.

I had a 2010 S4 for a year or so and there were definitely folks with a tune only running 12.2-12.4 1/4 mile times. I'd say the S4 with a tune will hang with a stock M3....straight line only of course.

seems like a lot of money. But then again, an SC kit for the E9X M3 from ESS can cost more. But it will be so fast.
What's interesting is that I heard some Audi dealers carry Stasis performance kits.

Keep in mind the Stasis tune is a mild tune, there are much more aggressive tunes available for the S4 (Revo, APR, GIAC). But what the majority of you are saying is still true.

FWIW, the Stasis package really isn't that great. It's good for those who want to buy the car modded through a dealer then not worry about investing any more into it down the road. You could build a much more equipped car by modding it yourself and still spend less than $11k, but some people don't like to go through the trouble.

True, but the Stasis modifications are warrantied via the dealer sorta like Dinan and BMW. Actually, it would make more sense to get an RS5 since they would be so close in price. Neither is enough to pry me from my M especially since the new model is on the horizon. The GTR is probably the only car I may replace my M with.

I've been a lurker for long enough and I guess this is the perfect time to jump in..

I currently drive a 2011 S4 with the Stasis tune, not the full package. In the S4 tuning world the Stasis package is very similar to Dinan for you guys. A factory matching warranty along with a more conservative tune for a minimal bump in cost.

Also, there is much better value to be had when tuning an S4 by piecing together parts from the variety of aftermarket tuners as opposed to going with the full Stasis setup. So while the Stasis kit is great as a turnkey solution, unless the warranty is very important to you, you can save serious coinage buying individual parts.

As far as performance goes, out of the box the S4 is definitely quick. Not quite M3 quick, but not exactly miles behind either. Many folks have managed anywhere between 12.8 to low 13's on stock setup.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are two versions of the Stasis tune out there in the wild. The older version that was coded by APR and the newer file which came as a result of Stasis purchasing one of the other tuners; Revo. The old file was good for probably an additional 50-60 hp, bringing the car up to around 400-410CHP. It may seem like my math is fuzzy but its been proven time and again that the S4 comes underrated from the factory and actually has closer to 360-370 chp in stock form.

The newer version of the tune produces a good deal more power. My car dynoed ~283whp in stock form, ~325whp with the old tune, and ~348whp with the newest version (same dyno). Nice gains for sure.

For comparison sake, a Stage II car, (tune + pulley), put down ~360whp 5 min after my run. Stage II APR cars, as mentioned above have been running anywhere between 11.9 to 12.3 in the 1/4.

As far as comparing it to the M3, it really depends what you are looking for. With the original tune and in a straight line from around 30-110, my car put roughly .5-1 car length on a stock M3 (09'). Once I had the update done, that grew to almost 3 lengths. But straightline speed is where the performance advantage ends. M3 feels sharper, better balanced and is more of a sports car, where as the S4 is more a sporty luxury car. Even with springs, front/rear sways, there is no hiding this car's weight, and the AWD leads to some numb steering feel in certain situations. FYI I do not have the sports diff, which many S owners claim transforms the car. I refuse to try a car with it, as a noticeable difference will ruin my happiness with my ride haha .

I was cross shopping between the M and S4 and ultimately it came down to northeast weather pretty much mandating AWD for me and my driving habits.

Not sure where OP is located, but if near NYC and you want to go for a drive, let me know and good luck!

IIRC, anywhere between 105-108 for stock cars, and anywhere between 109 - 120 for tuned cars. Depending on tune/pulley?/octane aka 93/100.

You can see a pretty thorough list here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ag-Strip-Times

Cool, I've been educated. . I trapped 116mph with intake, pulley, exhaust. But Quattro will definitely get me at the 1/4 mile track especially when they all trap around the same with the exception of that one guy that got it up to 120. Luckily for me, I only go to the 1/4 mile track to see how healthy my engine/mods are.

Yea that 120 is an outlier for sure. From what I see most non-pro's seem to be landing somewhere between 112-115.

From my limited knowledge about tuning M's, even though no forced induction, seems as though exhaust and pulley really open the car up.. and that sound.

M3 simply has no torque, thats why it loses to the s4 or 335-/135's
It definitely has the horsepower( top end), but for a street race/1/4 mile it really lacks the torque to help it accelerate. Thats why the s4(+tune) will beat the m3 in a straight line.
