Help with buying a Radar detector….Bad cop story
I work for a big health system which has 3 hospitals on the same route 15 miles in between. I needed to go from one hospital to another as there was an emergency. I was pulled over for 56 in a 25, trust me on more than 90% of this route it is 40 except this little stretch where the cops do their fund raising. He gave me a $191 and 5 points even when I told him I’m a doctor and showed him the ID and we have an emergency. His response was THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR SPEEDING...I really didn't have time to argue...I always had sports cars and NEVER got a tickets until this one...
Now which radar detector I should get??? Last edited by Race_Doc11; 10-30-2009 at 11:25 PM.. |

you prob cant get out of this completely but i think if you explained it to the judge, he may reduce the fine and the points ... so your penalty wont be so harsh. as for radar detectors, v1 or an escort 9500/8500 x50 or beltronics sti driver... heard good stories for all of these. i have the escort one.

start off with V1. Then if you get hit by a lot of laser, think about spending more money for lasser jammer later but not right away. V1 is the best way to start.

great advice so far...
As someone in a similar predicament, I am usually let go... The part that annoys me is that he had to exceed the speed limit to catch you...but that is okay so apparently there are reasons to speed...revenue

If you want the top of the line go for the Escort 9500ci which is a combination radar detector and laser detector/jammer.

Yeah, but it's $1600?!?!?! That's a lot of speeding tickets it would have to save you from.

If you can afford the Escort 9500ci, go for it.. It is the best 'system' available.
The V1 is very good - very sensitive (which is good and bad) and you know if the cop is in front of or behind you. On the downside it tells you where everything is, even false alarms. The Escort 9500xi is also very good. It automatically locks out repeated false alarms, has a large database with red-light and speed cameras and speedtraps. On the downside, some have observed that it lacks the ultra-sensitivity that the V1 has. I have heard very good things about the STi, but have not used one. Good luck and at least go to court and try to have the fine/pts reduced.. You have a very mitigating reason for speeding.. |

First fight the ticket. Get an attorney and get the points reduced. Revenue game. Waste of everybody's time.
Radar detector wise - I recommend V1. Has the arrows for which I find pretty handy. Mount it up by the rear view mirror doing a hardwire install with the sunroof for power. Laser Intereceptor for sure if you want to go laser jammer as well. Has served me well and completely recommend. |

Go to court and fight it!
Although, while it sounds like you have a legit reason, the cop is right - not an excuse for speeding - you were doing more than double the speed limit which is obviously unsafe and not being an emergency vehicle you dont have the right or probably training for that situation. You said Hospitals, no other doctors there? Having said all that, i hope you get out of your ticket, just dont think you can call the cop "Bad" for doing his job. |

Ya gotta love the typical God mentality of some doctors. I will give you a break if you are on the way to the ER on a call in,but it's extremely annoying when you stop some asshole and you know he's a doctor just by the way he brandishes his giant pager. Listen, everyone likes a break now and then, and I am more than willing to help out, but this attitude of BAD cop is bullshit. Just because you don't agree with the way the speed limits are set doesn't mean they're wrong. In my town we have the same set up. 35 or 40 for most of it except a bit thats 25. The reason it's 25 is because of the handicapped children's center on that road.
Sorry for the rant, but I get sick of people blaming the cops for their own driving. Did you take the drivers test? Did you pass? If you answered yes to these questions and took the drivers license, then you took responsibility to obey the laws in your state, much like you took the responsibility to obey the laws surrounding your medical license. They are both in place to keep people safe. Why can't you see that? |

As a cop, you have the discretion to actually escort the doctor to the hospital with your lights (if this were a true emergency), and then ticket the individual later. IMHO, this is nothing but another case of "small man syndrome"

And police cannot escort anyone to the hospital or anywhere else for that matter. Apparently you have based your opinion of what cops can do on the movies. You probably think we actually dip our fingers in cocaine to test it and indiscriminately shoot people right before the end of shift and go home too. Stop trying to avoid the issue of responsibility. |

I can't believe you've done this (to quote the OT) I think you will read this some day and realize how arrogant this sounds. I generally respect and appreciate the posts you have on this forum but this is just stupid. Not your best work. Last edited by Jaypod; 10-31-2009 at 02:05 PM.. |
