Buying used M3, advice.
Hi guys, I am looking to buy a 2008 - 2010 M3. I've looked around on here but can't really find any definitive answers. Is there anything I should look out for getting into these cars?
I am just worried about maintenance of the engine and the transmission mostly, the one I am looking at has 18,00km on it. Thanks

Most of these cars should be dealer maintained because it's free to 50k miles. Any BMW dealership can find the whole service history of the car no matter what dealership it was taken to.
But no major reacurring problems yet. Like the previous gen had common Vanos and subframe issues. That said I still got mine certified pre-owned because I don't want to be out of warrant on a $25k engine.

Get CPO, and definitely do a little research between the DCT and 6MT. This is the hot debate in these forums. There are definitely issues with DCT, and issues with the 6MT. Be aware before you make a decision if you haven't already.
You should also determine if you want iDrive/Tech Package/MDM/EDC/etc. For the most part, you can't retrofit these options after the fact. Good luck!

You'll be able to notice the wheels and height of the car (1cm. lower), as well as the Sport mode in DSC. I'm sure the dealer will tell you if it's a ZCP. I'll be honest with you; I have one and it's no big deal. It feels stiffer, but not worth $2500.
Btw, I recommend a 2009 or 2010 CPO... Navi was upgraded. |

Thank you guys, the car I checked out yesterday was a 2009 with DSG, no navi, 18,000km white with red interior.
It is not a CPO but looks pretty in pretty much perfect condition. It was akrapovic exhaust and dinan ecu, intake done by the local Brian Jessel BMW dealership. No accidents, local car. It was traded in to the MCL aston martin dealer. What do you guys think? Any other advice you guys can give me? Wear and tear? Consumption?

Wear and tear; I haven't experienced anything crazy yet, but then again, I only have 10k miles now.
Regarding gas; if this could be a concern for you, then you're getting the wrong car. Quote:

Some '08 and early '09 build dates have experienced the nightmare of main bearing problems, resulting in a 'ticking' sound much like valve noise when the engine revs.
Do a search on this forum for the relevant threads before you buy. |

I purchased my first e46 M3 from Brian Jessel BMW dealership in Vancouver. If the previous owner had his car serviced there (you say he is local) then you should be in good shape.
However, I strongly recommend that a BMW pre-sale inspection be made it will be around $150- money well spend then make it clear to the BMW SA that you plan to purchase the car and have it serviced there ,,, they will tell you then whatever may need to be done in the near future. It will do two things for you A) give you bargaining power on the sale price and B) let you know if anything major is in the cards for you as time moves on. As for fuel consumption ... it all depends how you drive ... normal highway driving (10 to 15 KM above posted) you can expect around 10.5 to 11L/100 KM. Good luck

Thanks, I am going to take it to Autowest BMW for a PPI since I am very close with the SAs there. The car was originally bought from Brian Jessel in as a 2009 model. It has warranty and the Dinan intake, ecu, as well as Akrapovic exhaust done and certified by Brian Jessel. Currently at 18,500km.
I've taken the car for a drive on saturday and it felt perfect. I am just worried about somethings I might have missed or unaware of. Would the inspection at BMW be able to tell me if the engine was broken in properly, red line, launch control use and things like that? Wish me good luck! Quote:

As I said, let them know that you will have the car serviced there and they will make sure they tell you everything. Best of luck to you ... let's see photos once you get the keys

IMO it doesn't matter whether the car is CPO'd or not. You can buy your own warranty, which is what a CPO basically is. Typically, dealers charge more for CPO car than what you can buy a warranty for. So, don't let the fact that a lot of M3's that are not CPO'd discourage you.
Most e92 M3's are pretty reliable but you never know. Check service history, Car Fax..etc. Good luck. |

I saw the same car in the Vancouver Craigslist. I would consider a 2011 M3 if your finances allow for it...I believe there are factory incentives for the M cars now.
Autowest (Richmond) has a 2011 M3 coupe - executive - 19" - navi - EDC - 9000KM - Demo for $79,000 after Freight and PDI. I'm sure you can work out a better deal with them... Or if you want a brand new one, go to BMW Store on Burrard, they have a new M3 Coupe and a new M3 Sedan in their showroom... I heard from one of the sale managers that there are as many as 30 new M cars in Canada that are not sold....not unusual given the bad economy I guess, so you can get a decent deal if you find the right store |
