I think I am seeing similar oil usage on 2008 car. 42k miles, mostly freeway driving (3/4 of my driving). Some city driving / stop start (1/4). |

Not saying it's true for everyone, but it's what I'm experiencing.

I have close friends at BMW and most techs are saying depending on how you drive 1 quart of oil every 1000 to 1200 miles is normal. I know this doesn't sound right to most but unless you have visual leaks or signs of oil burning oil ( excessive smoke from tail pipes) most dealers with tell you there is no problem.

That's 10-15 quarts before the factory scheduled oil change interval.. not normal to burn that much on this motor.. no way. My car needs a half quart every 7K. I didn't follow the ridiculous break-in procedure. Was hitting redline like a madman at 600 miles. I didn't beat it off the start but did a number of deceleration runs down hills, varying throttle and load, etc.. The engine has always been very strong and zero issues.
