GT-R transmission problems, faillures, no warranty, price hike
I suspect this will give wonderful fuel to the fire that the only reason I think some GT-Rs are substantially under rated is because I hate Nissan, hate GT-Rs and can't stand the fact that they are faster than M3s. Well nothing could be further from the truth. However, the truth hurts Nissan in this regard.
Many GT-Rs are having transmission failures and Nissan is refusing to replace them if folks ever used LC (which requires turning their vehicle dynamics control off). So in other words obtaining "magazine" times for 0-60 or 0-100 automatically voids your warranty. Talk about BS. Lots of discussion here at NAGTROC. Many other similar threads over there talking about related issues. Nissan halts GT-R production. Link here. Many suspect this is due to the transmission failure issue. Hmmm, not to mention a price hike of $7,000 for the US (link). So much for the "bang for the buck argument". Nice job using the "loss leader" pricing. My suspicion has been all along that Nissan actually looses money on eacg GT-R they sell, this is just trying to minimize losses. All of this absolutely dampens some of my enthusiasm for the car. |

What's sad is, if I was on the market for a 2 door, and could get the car anywhere near MSRP, I would've bought it. And after reading this, I would immediately put my shit on ebay!

Wow, how can you expect to sell cars to happy customers if you can't even turn off the stability control?

That is so bad it is almost hard to believe that it is true. Why even bother putting the LC on a vehicle if any damage done while using it is not under warranty.

I'd be pretty pissed if I owned a GT-R.

I respect the GT-R and considered purchasing one. IMHO, Nissan has done a horrible job selling this car in North America. I can't believe you risk warranty coverage if you turn off stability control. And I'm not talking doing a bunch of launches, I'd be pissed about being required to have the handling nanny on all the time. On the subject of launches, all those sub 3.5 second 0-60 mag reports should have had a disclaimer "to achieve these times we had to disable stability/traction control which could impact warranty coverage".

I feel for you GTR owners. That Black Box is unacceptable along with Nissan NA's position. If you owners band together, even people without failures can join a class action lawsuit. Nissan should be very afraid. The GTR was a PR victory for Nissan, exposing internal data / documents would be disasterous to Nissan and they would fight this. You guys should pressure Nissan on the legal front.....they will get in a room and the CEO is going to decide the couple $millions covering the warranty claims or the horrific PR that internal documents would likely reveal. You guys need to band together. Good Luck

This is a really long thread but if you like the humorous photoshop dis-ing on the GT-R like the one above, dig through this post. There are some real haters over there. Well not really "haters" but they have posted some of the funniest anti-GT-R / GT-R humor stuff I have ever seen.

Add to this the fact that transmission fluid changes are mandated at 18,000 miles. That would not be so bad if they didn't cost over $1,000. The diff's fluid must be changed as well, which adds another $200 min. However, (this is the best part) if you drive hard for extended periods or track the car, the the intevals are reduced to 1,800 miles. The proprietary GT-R trans fluid is $80 per quart, The complete system holds 10.3 quarts. So a change might only take 8-9. Add the extra required quarts for properly flushing the trans and you're likely over 10 again.
According to Nissan, the rotors must be changed with the pads and all four must be done at the same time. Total cost with labor: $6,000-$6,500. Plan on doing brakes at less than 25k miles, 30k tops. During the warranty, annual alignments are required. After that one must be done every year at a cost to the customer. The warranty is 3 years. This cars appears to be more finicky and expensive to maintain than a Ferrari. Drive the car hard for 18,000 miles and you might as well add about $20k in fluid changes alone, and that's not counting any oil changes. |

Good summation swamp! This is really bad PR for Nissan. I'm no longer going to think "awesome" when I see a GT-R. I'm going to think "POS."
Great job, Nissan!!

I think the GTR is a new candidate for a "Motivational" poster. Nissan ran in to many legal issues with the Alignment/Tire cupping/camber wear problem on the early model 350Z's. Nissan didn't do shit at first, but the Class Action Lawsuit made things happen. It was proven that Nissan new about the issue and denied covering it under warranty, so then Nissan had to pay back big time to those people with issues. I got some free tires out of the deal and a free alignment. Plus they recently sent me something saying I'm eligible for some other things that came out of the lawsuit, but it wasn't worth my time. The GTR issue will be tough to get off the ground, because there are much less people out there with GTR's (compared to Z's) and the issue in question regarding denial of warranty was/is expressed clear as day in the owner's manual, AFAIK. Where as the alignment issue is clearly a manufacture defect, and statement the clearly relieves liability for warranty. Good luck GTR owners, I think its a crock of shit, but I don't see how you can fight something thats in writing.

All the hype of the GT-R is quickly turning into a disaster for Nissan. The whole Ring times aside, these tranny/VDC issues and such a restrictive warranty are embarrassing for Nissan. As M3 owners we are very fortunate that BMW is willing to stand behind their product despite what it might cost them. Botched DCT oil changes have undoubtedly cost hundreds of thousands in parts and labor alone. Nissan spying on their customers through the blackbox is also absurd. I could understand it from a diagnostic perspective, but it appears to me that its sole purpose is to protect them in a warranty claim. I was recently in southern california and saw two silver GT-Rs at Tuttle-Click Nissan on the showroom floor. Asking price: $108,000 (34,000 dealership markup). HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! |

Hah? How's top possible? Are they joking?
It sounds like you void the warranty on this car if you turn the ignition on...

Could BMW extract more performance from their M engines....definately. But at what price. I am relieved that I can push my M3 as hard as I want and be secure knowing that I won't hurt it or void the warranty because I broke a "rule" in the owners guide. The GT-R is great for some, but the M3 is awesome for all. 7600 miles and not one problem. Well, maybe it is time for some new rear PS2s but that is not a problem.
