Cayman / Boxster S a real Porsche?

My buddies are giving me a lot of crap about the Cayman / Boxster S not being a true P-car. I don't understand..these cars perform pretty much as well, look exactly the same inside and cost a lot less (if you want).

I am looking into a Cayman / Boxster after my 335 lease..rally can't find anything to dislike about these cars.

you can pick up an 07 Cayman S with 5k miles for 45k right now..that's a steal!

+1, but Porsche snobs don't like any model that does not start with '9' and end with '11', unless it's a derivative like the 959 or 930, or a direct ancestor like the 356 or 550. I discovered this when I had a 1 of 50 made Worldwide '89 928GT in near concours condition, Porsche's most exclusive and expensive model that year, and it was completely ignored at PCA events.

FWIW, the Cayman S is also on my list of cars to consider, but I'd take it to BMW CCA DE events

I'm looking into it as my next car as well (Cayman S). I agree with you, there's really not much to dislike about it. I also think it looks better than the base 911s.

I had a 944 Turbo, and a 968. They were both fantastic cars.

Porsche morons think that a 911 is the only true Porshe. It's just a stupid mindset. For me, I think the 911 shape is getting REALLY old.....geez, get over it and move on. I think this belief is holding Porsche as a company back.

I suppose they don't think a Carrera GT is a real Porsche either.

The Boxster and Cayman are both so much better balanced than a 911. I'd take a Cayman S anytime, or a Boxster S.

In the early 90's Porsche made a 968 Turbo, and after they found that it could beat a 911 Turbo around the Nurburgring, they decided not to build it.

Get the Cayman S, and let your "buddies" deal with their insecurities.

Go and steal one! You will not regret it at all. I've had 2 911's and 2 Boxsters and to be honest, I have more fun with the Boxsters. I don't really care what anybody thinks because that mid engine design is fun as Hell and doesn't feel like a lard-butt like the 911's did. For a while I drove it as my only car while I was waiting for my BMW to be built. It was a great daily driver.

Now would you get a Cayman or a Boxster? The Caymans handle a bit better, but is it really noticeable? I don't know..top down down to the beach in a Boxster S is really going to be a blast. And it handles good enough..I don't think I would miss the stiffer Cayman. Thoughts?

I love the way the Cayman handles and looks, but I really wanted a sports car that you could put the top down on a nice day. It's a GREAT, free feeling driving home on a nice Friday for the weekend with the top down (confirm this with any e93 owner!). With the top up on my '06, you wouldn't even know it's a rag top because it's quiet and rattle free.
When I had my e46 M3, the Boxster got driven more than the M3 which felt 2x as fast but not quite as fun.
One thing you'll miss is the creature comforts in a BMW (the Bose sucks in the Porsche and is antique compared to BMW's)
Go drive both and then decide, you cant' go wrong either way.

To me it depends on how you'll use it. If you do a lot of track stuff and want to maximize the performance aspect, get the Cayman S. If you want a car for just some fun, spirited driving, purely for your own enjoyment, I'd go w/ the Boxster S. Not sure how a ragtop would be in New Jersey winters if your going to use it as a daily driver. That may not be an issue. The Cayman would get more attention because it's a newer design and people aren't so use to seeing them. It's also a bit more striking design in my opinion.

It sounds like you may want the Boxster a bit more....It depends on how much you'll put the top down.

I honestly don't know which way I would go.... I'd probably lean a bit toward the Cayman, just because to me the Boxster is starting to seem a bit old, and maybe because I keep seeing this white Cayman around where I live that's just beautiful.....white with 20" BBS rims....

Good luck!

All porsches are real. They're made by Porsche and has the soul that every engineer put forth in the 911.

For a car that can out due a 335i, I think it might be real there. Don't listen to your buddies, and listen to your ... ok i will stop here.

who wants a coxter?

all jokes aside, they are still porsches in my mind. That's unfair to say that they aren't because Porsche is known so well for its 911's. It'd be like asking if non ///M cars are really BMW's at heart

Anyone who's ever pushed a Boxster S to its limits will tell it might be more porsche than anything not named with a GT badge

i like how you think! 911's are real porsche's cause they're RR and that makes for oversteer whereas boxters and caymens are MR which makes too much sense. [/sarcasm]

Porsche could take the MR layout so far with the engineering prowess they have...it's a shame really.

Cayman or Boxter S are true Porsche. How qualified are your friends to say otherwise. I'd be glad have either on my drive.

well according to Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear, and I quote: "The only reason why you would buy a Boxter or Cayman is that you cannot afford a 911. The Boxter and Cayman are made to be not good enough on purpose to fill in the gap."

Exactly. Porsche puposefully under-engineers their MR cars so that they don't dominate the 911's. It's one of the things about Porsche that bothers me, right next to the ridiculous pricing of their options and their grossly unnecessarily large profit they make.

lmfao, true. See, that's what Porsche can do with (what I think is) FIVE year old tech. Imagine what they're capable of now...
