How many of you payed for the Gas Guzzler Tax? Check out this link, might be worth it

I would like to know what you guys think about this, check out this link:

http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/guzzler/420b07018.pdf

A friend of mine who's getting the new Audi S5 in a few days, found this doc online, and went back to his dealership and complained about the fact that he shouldn't be paying that tax since his car wasn't on that list. And guess what, his salesperson took it of without even arguing with him. I personnaly already paid for it a long time ago, but will definitely stop by my dealership soon to ask, but I wanted to know your opinions before.

Take care, Sadd

Note the date on that document: October 18, 2007. The new M3 was not even in production at that point and might not have finished efficiency and emissions testing.

From the fueleconomy.gov website:

"The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars)."

If it's on the sticker, you have to pay the tax. That list is probably for reference and not 100% accurate. I'd love to avoid the tax as much as anyone (I pick mine up next month), but I don't think the government will let you off that easy.

Probably because the M3 is a late 2008 model year entry and epa didn't update their list. I'm sure it will be there for 2009.

So.... does that mean us 2008 owners can get our gas guzzler tax money back so we can spend it on retrofitting the 2009 version iDrive?

What I find stupid is they double tax you. Nevermind the stupid gas tax, but it gets added to your sticker from which they also determine the sales tax.

But SUV's are exempt from this.....so stupid.

If you want to avoid the gaz guzzler tax, buy a Hummer or a Land Rover. They and all other trucks are exempt thanks to the dysfunctional organization known as the EPA.

You shouldn't be double taxed.

My taxable amount was minus the gg.

I was double taxed (based off the workup sheet). But they forgot to charge me for the sunroof so I'd call it even.

Hey, great point. I believe they did in fact tax me on the GGT, which is $78 in my state. Not worth stressing over, but something I will remember to look out for next time.

As unfair as it seems, you were supposed to be double-taxed. As someone already posted above, BMW pre-pays the GGT on these cars itself and rolls that amount into the price of the vehicle. So, you end up paying sales tax on the whole thing. The old luxury tax was the same way.

Aha, ok. Bummer too, I just realized the tax-tax is actually $102 for me. Actually that all sounds vaguely familiar now from when I bought the E46. People forget the E46 has GGT also, though it was only $1000 instead of $1700.

Proving once again how f**king stupid, hypocritical and useless our government is.

They should have charged you double for the sunroof as punishment for not getting a coupe with CF roof. But I digress........

BTW, your car looked last saturday.

Haha thanks. Well I was ready to get the coupe because the CF roof looked sweet but my wife quickly stepped in and nixed that idea along with the GT-R.
