Austin meet July 27th Kerby Lane on 183N, 9am

Had my M for 5 months and thought it'd be cool to meet fellow members in Austin. Just throwing this idea out there.

Edit:

Meet will be July 27th Kerby Lane on 183N, 9am. Please confirm if you can make it. I will call them Thursday to see if they can accommodate us in any special way. Thanks

Confirmed:
1. 8k3
2. whats77inaname
3. jphughan
4. m0da
5. immamac
6. Tora
7. Srim3
8. Cizzle (with modded 135)

UPDATE:
Spoke with a manager at Kerby Lane, tried to get consecutive parking spots reserved and a reservation for breakfast, he was very polite but said that Saturday is just crazy busy and he really couldn't do anything. He urged us to still come lol. Oh well I tried. Meet is still on...

I may be in depending on timing. 4th of July weekend is no good, in-laws visiting.

And of course assuming I'll be able to make it, if anyone who will be there wants some free coding I'll be happy to oblige.

I'm not in town from 3rd-6th I'd totally be down after that. Maybe second week of July works better?

So did this happen or should we schedule something this weekend?

Driveway Austin is having its L1 course this weekend at 9 AM I was thinking about going.

395, includes 3 20 minute sessions of track time + instruction.

Hasn't happened yet, I assumed we were waiting until after the long weekend. Driveway Austin has sort of an Auto-X feel to it, and Driver's Edge charges $315 for a full weekend of 8 25-minute sessions with instructors and classroom courses on real racetracks, so I question the value there.

Just got back from vacation, glad to see interest, I'm down. Where ya'll want to meet? SoCo area is nice (coffee shops, food, etc), Sandys on Barton Springs, Whole Foods on Lamar.

Those are my 3 ideas, how about some others and we just pick one.

I'd vote Barton Springs area, maybe Shady grove, Billy's or Peso and Bucks.

Those have good parking and food/stuff to do.

They feed you and everything, just no gas.

I'd say that this is cooler than the drivers edge because you can go any day of the week and drive whenever you want for pretty cheap. It's a very real track, especially if you go all the way through L3.

^Hmm, Armco/walls in most places with little to no runoff, especially in areas where you're doing 120-140 isn't the best. I understand that walls are necessary in an environment like that since the alternative is a ditch, but that's a major risk. Also, most insurance policies don't cover driving on racetracks for any reason and separate track insurance is fairly expensive, and even they probably wouldn't cover open practice days if we did that. My insurance covers me for HPDEs, but I doubt that would apply to open track day practice sessions since that's not really a driving school type event. Even if we did a structured course to make insurance work, assuming people were willing to pay for track insurance where necessary, people have varying levels of existing track experience and therefore we wouldn't all fit in the same course level. And Driveway Austin doesn't look terribly cheap once you start moving up. L3 practice sessions are $100 for 30 minutes, which works out to over double the per-minute cost of Driver's Edge, and that value discrepancy doesn't even factor in the instructors and classes you get with Driver's Edge for what they charge.

Maybe karting would be the better way to go for all those reasons? The kart track looks reasonably fun, the value is pretty reasonable compared to a place like K1, and it would be a lot cheaper especially if you'd have to buy track insurance for your car to do practice sessions.

I think its worth the money to be able to go on a tuesday at 2 PM and just drive fast less than 10 minutes out of town. They also have Monthly options, so if you go more than 4 times a month you are driving down the cost significantly. I don't think its supposed to replace the feel of a "race" or a proper "track" its just a place to go let loose in a safer/legal environment.

They won't let you on the L3 course unless you have a spec miata or an approved car (E9x M3 gets approval)

8 - 30 minute sessions would still only be 400 bucks. 50/session is a pretty good deal.

Time cost/benefit

You're neglecting the risk of not being able to have insurance for those types of open practice sessions, which could end up shifting the cost equation pretty substantially....

Ok made some suggestions as did immamac. I'm fine with Shady Grove on Barton Springs. Cool with everyone? Let me know, I'll try to give them a call once we finalize a date and try to have them accommodate us (parking too perhaps). I'm free this weekend. Guys not trying to be rude in any way but can we please not derail the thread with track discussion, let's focus on a meet and talk track when we/if we do this

^ Agreed, I was hoping that the person who proposed this would jump in and make some decisions.

I may have to leave town this weekend for the week thereafter, but I should still be around this Saturday if we can get something together.
