I look at mod's as an investment - in MY pleasure. I do it because I love BMW's and I love to add my personal touches. Exhaust, Wheels, exterior mods - they all vary based on what I want to do - to my e46 m3 I went the CSL route - on my 650I I went towards and m6, on my X5 I just put beautiful big rims and better exhaust -- and let her rip.
I also don't look at the total expense - as I have done quite well reselling the mods when I sell the car. I ALWAYS save the OEM parts and put it back to stock for trade in / sale. In this way instead of looking at a $5k outlay on wheels its $5k up front and then $3.5k on the back - so for $1.5k I get three years of enjoyment and then someone else can have the fun - and I can start over! We have one of the few hobbies where what we invest gives right back to us in pleasure - a real physical pleasure every time we get behind the wheel. It's not a BMW - its MY BMW. I spent $2,000 on a set of golf clubs and I love golf - but after a few rounds there was no joy in them - only regret... Glad my M3 pays it forward! |

Modifications and budget
Also, budget and "too much" is *extremely* relative . When I was younger, I had a different financial outlook and situation. I had more disposable income, etc. and I modified my last E36 somewhat extensively. Now that I'm...er, middle aged and have two kids and contemplating retirement in an uncertain environment, I'm leery spending ANYTHING these days, which is why I drive a 16 year old car (Albeit an M3 8^D). I upgrade as things break...So how am I going to get cams and injectors into the car?
Read, "Millionare Next Door." You'll never upgrade again... 8^( Marc E36 M345 125k Ellipsoids, shift kit, stereo update(120k), Konis (100k) SRDs from an old E36 waiting to go in...That's it. |

Most of my mods are impulse purchases, which is why I try to stay away from the Classifieds when I am feeling low on disposable income.

As long as my way of life is in no way affected or changed by purchasing mods and I have increasing savings in the bank, I am totally happy to spend on the car. It's when your savings account is dropping and you eat ramen at home rather than being comfortable eating at a nice restaurant that you may need to reevaluate your spending habits. Not to mention if you have kids, or if the house, car, or apartment isn't paid for, etc. Just my $0.02.

If the mods even make you think 'will i be able to pay for X that is a necessity' you shouldn't do them. It's pretty simple. I wouldn't ever charge a mod or finance it. Hell I wouldn't even have my car financed if the PenFed rates were not so good!

I don't think it's possible to "rationalize" any upgrades; our cars are already great machines coming out of the factory. However, it is in our nature to want more, hence the reason we upgrade. What is "justifiable"? I really don't know the answer to that; I have already put on a new exhaust, SC, BBK, and so on. In my book, if I can "responsibly" afford it, why not? I only get to live once...

Bottom line...you ONLY live once. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your labor. My car is a hobby, which i enjoy.
That said, I do agree, if you're "financing" mods by running up debt on your CC, that's plain stupid.
