Fuel Pump Malfunction Warning
I was at a light and launched the car in M-mode. Got up to speed then the warning came on. I slowed her down and drove 20mph only a few miles home. Even the max rpm gauge dropped down to 7500. I let the car sit several hours and drove her around to see and the warning went away. Warmed up and drove fine. This morning drove to BMW and once again warmed up and drove no issues. BMW can't see the car until Monday I'm under warranty (08 with 25500 miles).

Usually when this happens, shut off the car then restart the car.
By doing that, you are starting a new cycle. How much gas you had in the tank when it happened ? Also, use known names for gas stations ! |

Nope didn't stall at all. I had 3/4 tank of Chevron gas. I'll update Monday and let you all know what BMW diagnoses.

I just got this same issue actually, but different circumstances. I was just driving home from a friends on the highway, downshifted to pass someone and the warning came on mid-pass. It said there was a fuel pump malfunction and it needed to get checked right away. Reduction in power and a half yellow CEL came on the dash too. It drove fine the last 15 miles home on the highway but I was not giving it any hard acceleration or anything.
The funny thing is just the day before I was having my tank filled at the gas station and the pump kept shutting off every 1 or 2 seconds like it thought the tank was full. I asked the attendant if it was my card (thinking maybe it got locked for some reason) and he said no it wouldn't be the card, but may be your gas tank and I needed to take it to the dealer ASAP. I blew him off and just blamed the pump because after a few shut offs it finally started to pump as normal. This was a fairly large Shell station as well, not some rinky-dink place. Now this happens though and I dunno...maybe he was right. Or the gas cap wasn't closed right. I am going to call tomorrow and have the car valet'd in for diagnosis. Thank goodness for warranties. |

I drove it to work that night so I could bring her in Saturday morning. On Saturday morning BMW service was packed and would not be able to see it until Monday. Also on the way to BMW no issues. I didn't really get on it. So I rolled the dice and drove it today. No hard acceleration but still drove hard. No issues no nothing. Still bring her in Monday morning for my appt.

I have an 08 M3 sedan with 33k miles and got the message driving home today. I was only going about 50 mph, no high rpms or anything. I called and am taking it down tomorrow morning.

My CA put me in an 09 528i. Looks like it just came in as a lease return. Only has 29k miles. The SA said he hadn't seen that message before. Not alot of M3s in my town though.

They replaced the Fuel Pressure Sensor and the Fuel Pump Control Module then had to do a complete re-programming. The reprogramming took about 3 hours. All is well again. SA said he hadn't seen that failure on the M3.

Probably a fuel pressure plausibility error. Sensor is cheap and easy to replace. Common failure point on the E9x M3.

I had the Fuel Pump Module replaced as well under warranty.
It's located behind the passenger side rear seat bolster.
