Damn construction going on all over the place around me. What housing recession? Ran over a screw, yesterday, today, last week. No idea. Just noticed it today and I guess it's possible that it did not completely penetrate the tread. It's a rear tire with 15.5K so not exactly what I would call a loss.

Question are:

1) If the screw has not completely penetrated the tread, should I remove it or leave it? And if I leave it, is there a risk that it will eventually work it's way through the tread? Tire has about 4/32nds left on it.

2) If it has penetrated is the screw too close to the sidewall to repair with plug/patch?

UPDATE: PULLED THE SCREW AND IT'S JUST SHY OF 1/2 INCH IN LENGTH (7/16 TO BE EXACT). Still no leak. Anyone know roughly what length it takes to penetrate the tread on a PS2 with about 4/32nd in tread?

Call me paranoid, but I'm replacing that tire before the car sees north of 57 mph again.......

It's nearly gone anyway, and just not worth it. Yes, I realize that means a pair.

same thing happened to me but i left it in i dont think its more than a quater inch in so i feel better knowing yours was in 7/16s and no leak.

I thought about leaving it in but what you can't really see from the picture is that it's one of those screws with a raised head that can be torqued with a wrench. So in other words everytime the tire rotated it was pushing on the screw.

Oh well, I guess it's time to think about getting new rears.

Pretty random! Actually, if I only putted around town at 40 I'd never replace it. If I expressed concern about it blowing at 80-120 I'd get kicked around the forum for speeding off-track. But come on - let's face it; at full throttle you're at 80+ and back down if needed in virtually no real estate, and there's a difference between bursts to 110 on deserted backroads and swerving in interstate traffic at the same speed.

Good luck with the replacement - make sure they understand you want the wheels back in the same condition. I've found tips work well.....

If you take the screw out and it doesnt leak any air, you're fine. Dont buy new tires. Even if it did fully penetrate and you had even the most minor leak, the tire would never "blow out" just because of that, at any speed.

Well, less than a half inch, must have been in at an angle. Yes, it can be repaired, and you should use a plug/patch from the inside. I've used tires repaired in that manner on track at 170 mph (ZO6). The risk in repaired tires in with longevity, as moisture may seep around the repair and attack the cords. But if you wear out tires every few months anyway, no problem. This may not be your situation.
