The OP simply asked if you could break the tail loose though. People have been doing that in cars with automatic transmissions for decades now.

Don't sweat everyone being pricks just because you ask a question THEY think is a stupid one. It's the nature of internet forums. Some people think it necessary to get up on a high horse and try to make others feel inferior, when they have a keybaord and a few thousand miles between them to hide behind. I was hoping these forums would have more mature, helpful people around. Saddly I was mistaken.

People get very brave being obnoxious with the protection of a username and the internet. There'd be a lot more people landing on their asses if they spoke to people in real life the way they think they can on here. Sad really.

OP: Enjoy the car and just go easy on your first few attempts on sliding just like you would with any new car while you're getting used to it.

To the OP, i suggest checking out the BMW CCA in your area: http://www.rmcbmwcca.org/
and sign up for one of the car control clinics or driving school events.
You'll get to experience and test how fast you can go when your tail breaks loose as well as other important techniques in a safe and controlled environment.

I did a car control clinic with my DCT and was able to experience whipping the tail around in the skidpad as well as controlling it with DSC off. Plus, you'll have a blast!

Thanks for the link. Exactly what I've been looking for.

Edit: Damn! I'll be in Germany for the first one at the closer track.

The M3 with DSC off is serious stuff.

The only benefits of a manual, is that you have bit more control of what direction the car is going. DCT is for mostly going straight, and the manual is for turns..

Yep, I highly recommend this. I just completed one of these yesterday and it was a great experience: fun and yet highly practical (all of the skills are useful in daily driving). It's a nice safe controlled environment where you can learn both the car''s limits and your limits.

You will definitely be lacking control with the DCT. In my E46 I used to be able to drop it into second around corners, blip the throttle, quickly disengage the clutch and you get a very nice and controlled slide.

Hrmm...I really miss having a 6 speed car.
