Blown engine now what? stay s65 or go s85 swap?

Ok so im to the point where my engine on my e90 blew. OIL PUMP failure and fused my crankshaft and block together. Now im deciding whether to get another s65 engine or pay some more for the s85 v10 swap.

To your knowledge, what parts would I need to do the swap other than engine?

Would it work with my manual 6speed?

Thank you drivers!

Please follow up here for official thread! Sorry for changing it I wanted to make a fresh one with full updates and pics

I don't think the manual 6SP tranny from the M3 will work in the M5 since the bellhousing is probably different.

Edit: someone said its same trans so I stand corrected

If you have money to play with, I would definitely do the S85 swap. Since you're in socal, you can drive my e60 m5 and see how the engine feels. I would kill fror that motor to be in my M3. It's hard for me to go back to the M3 sometimes after driving the M5 for awhile.

Go for the s85 , it will be a beast. Curious to know if the dct can match with the s85?

Depends how deep your pockets are. A replacement S65 is already not going to be cheap, but an S85 would be astronomical I would think. Would love to see a V10 in there though. I'd totally do it if I had the funds. That has got to be one of the best sounding engines out there.

It's been done before. I remember seeing a post a while back. Try to find it and direct them with all the questions you may have. Good luck

I thought about putting an S85 in my car .I actually got the motor too but it was going to be so much work and headaches that it was much easier building the S65 and slapping a blower on it.
Good Luck !

That's what I'm thinking too. Just to get all the electronics and modules to work

Even swapping for an S65 sounds like a pretty daunting task.

False. A e9x 6 speed will bolt up to an s85. It's been done before

It's pretty much the same motor (s65 to s85) just with 2 extra cylinders. It's not as hard as it looks. Also you can find m5 motors on eBay for pretty decent deals. Only drawback is the antiquated high pressure vanos of the v10. The dct AFAIK will not work

Both engines use the same transmission (ZF GS6 - something)

Custom engine mounts, cooling system, lubrication system, starter, alternator, wiring harness, ECU or a standalone unit etc... Stuff like that. And i believe there won't be room for A/C comperssor unless you do something creative. That's a deal killer for most people.

I've always wondered if the S65 front cover with the updated low-pressure VANOS could be adapted to the S85

That's cool that it will bolt up, I thought the bell housings would be different.

The M3 and M5 DME are almost completely identical. You can even put an M5 DME in an M3 and it will power up and communicate. So wiring wise it wouldn't be too bad other than swapping the m5 sensors and adding wires for the addition 2 cylinders.

My god that motor just looks so sexy in there.

I'm now having crazy thoughts of doing this myself and putting the S65 in my 7 series...

Mike my friend...bring your cars to Manhart (Germany)they will do it !
Then take a plain and make a stop in Belgium and visit me at my home, and like we said the other day...we can drink the best Belgian beers & eat Belgian chocolate
Than when your car is ready with Manhart...you can drive my ///M3 with your BPM tune and DCT coding on the Deutsche Autobahn direction Manhart !
But the bill at Manhart is for you ....

Just went by the Manhart site. A guy could spend a lot of money there... The twin turbo swap is another interesting option though it wouldn't have that cool V10 sound.

S85 and S65 cost roughly the same from what I have seen and the S85 also seems more prevalent.

OP, definitely do the swap! I almost bought an M5 ONLY because of that glorious V10. I think it sounds better than a lot of exotic V10s.

It's been done and I doubt it will be as difficult as some people are saying. Trans will work so you likely won't need to move anything there which means you can use the M3 trans mounts and driveshaft.

You may need custom motor mount arms. However, one or the other MAY fit. On the E30 for example, using E36 motor mount arms and E28 M5 motor mounts, a 24V M/S5X motor will bolt right in.

As Mike has mentioned, electronics will be very similar. I realize that things have changed but older BMWs have only one large connection between the engine and the body harness that is easily repinned with a new plug. Since these cars are so similar, I wouldn't be surprised if something similar is possible.

I really think that this can be done with 100% OEM parts. Just like the S50 into the E30 and S54 into the E36.
