Jeff Koons M3 GT2 Art Car - Unveiled at Art Basel Miami (NA Debut)
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Unveiled. by ddk632, on Flickr I had the honor and privilege of attending the North American debut of the Jeff Koons BMW M3 GT2 Art Car at Art Basel in Miami this week, and figured if there's any place on Bimmerpost that will appreciate these photos, it's M3Post! For those not familiar, BMW has a 38 year tradition of taking race cars and having a famous artist paint them. The first one was the Andy Warhol M1 (also on display in Miami right now - hoping to go see it today!). This M3 GT2, which raced in 24 Hours of LeMans in 2010, is the 17th and currently last BMW Art Car. You can click on any of the photos to view the large or full size version. To see the full set of photos (62), check out my Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidkh...7638368209376/ The Unveiling The Unveiling by ddk632, on Flickr The setup for the BMW M3 GT2 event at Art Basel, Miami was nothing short of spectacular. Hats off to the BMW marketing team for their hard work putting this together. Several speakers, including who I believe is the head of BMW NA and Jeff Koons himself, the artist who painted the car, spoke at the event prior to the unveiling. Jeff Koons described the inspiration for the art, which is meant to look like it's warping off of the car, and how the final result is actually Plan B because Plan A was going to add too much weight to this race car. First image is Jeff Koons: BMW spared no expense. Besides the open bar, the catering by a famous chef of little "Canapes" (hors d'oeuvres) such as mini burger sliders and seafood dishes, they booked famous supermodel Karolina Kurkova to do the honors. Karolina Kurkova Unveils BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by ddk632, on Flickr Jeff Koons and Karolina Kurkova at the Unveiling Jeff Koons and Karolina Kurkova Pose with BMW M3 GT2 Art Car by ddk632, on Flickr It was really cool to see all the cameras and Jeff Koons and Karolina Kurkova staying for photo ops and interviews (mostly Jeff Koons). They even did some jumping high fives for the occasion... At one point it was kind of funny, Jeff Koons busted out his cell phone to take photos of the car! So I got a few shots of him taking pics of his masterpiece! I got to meet Mr. Koons and shake his hand, and thank him for his beautiful art! (I'm on the right in both photos. I gave my camera to a "professional" photographer and ended up with me and Jeff Koons out of focus, lol! They are still keepers because, how often does this happen, right? The Car Reflection of Speed and Art by ddk632, on Flickr This car is an absolute, literal, work of art. Beautiful from every angle and I couldn't stop looking at it. I hope these photos do her justice! Again it was an honor and privilege, and certainly a pleasure, to attend this event in Miami. If you are down here in Miami, the car is still on display at the Miami Botanical Garden, right across the street from Art Basel which is at the Miami Beach Convention Center. I believe it's there through Sunday, when Art Basel ends. Not entirely sure so go see it today if you can! |

The entire car is wrapped in printed vinyl correct? It looks really cool especially from the front and sides but I've never been crazy about the graphics in the trunk and rear bumper. Still its great to look at. Looks like you had a great time!

Yes absolutely it's worth checking out. I just went again today hoping to see the M1 but learned I needed VIP tickets which I didn't have, and weren't for sale... so I saw the M3 GT2 again and had a nice glass of Scotch. Quote:
I hear you about different parts of the car being more appealing. I look at it as a whole piece rather than review separate parts. The vivid colors just stand out to me. And, I am art-ignorant, just love the cars! Definitely a great time! |

Always loved this car, Warhol's debacle doesn't compare. He just randomly slapped some paint on it over the course of 20 minutes and it shows.
I agree. The orange splotches were a step too far. Still lovely to look at. That front lip is insane. |

Well done, I love this car and the whole idea/history of the BMW art car. Racing, art, expert photography and a beautiful woman what's not to like. Thanks for taking the time.

Great photos! I remember seeing this car in person racing at Le Mans in 2010. The whole weekend was an experience I'll never forget.

Thanks guys!
Thanks! And, wow, now THAT must have truly been awesome, seeing this car in action. I've been to big motorcycle races (WSBK, MotoGP) but never a big car race. Formula 1 in Monaco has been on my bucket list since I was a kid. I should add 24 Hours of LeMans to that as well! |
