Very happy with fuel consumption

My 2006 323i gets approximately 10.2 L/100km in the city and approx. 6.9L/100km on the highway. This thing is the perfect car.

Is this with the manual trans. or the Steptronic?
If this is your actual calculated fuel mileage you are bettering the official figures of 11.1 & 6.9. (manual)

Hopefully you do know that your car isn't a V6 but an inline-6 (aka straight 6).

My car has the manual 6-speed. This is my actual calculated fuel mileage.

Lol leave him alone. This is why people come here, to learn. :P
I wish I could say the same about my fuel comsumption but I'm always in stop-and-go traffic with my 330i so I'm only getting 18 mpg. I guess maybe that's good considering the circumstances though.

that's pretty good. My 330i is dishing out 13 L/100km, but it's still breaking in, so hopefully it'll be better down the road.

When I first got the car, it was far below the mpg I was expecting, probably only getting 22mpg... but 3k miles later, I'm averaging about 28 mpg. I do a lot of highway driving, and try to keep it below 80, but there are those times when the car just wants to be driven...

Awesome! my 330 average around 8 to 9L/100km. This figure will have some of the Hong Kong members who are driving 320i & 323i jaws dropped off!!! They always complaint about their E90 being very thirsty - 10 to even 13L/100km.

What's yr secret?

it's really no secret,i've posted in the E90POST Hong Kong sub-forum, here is what i do:-

instead of drive & go, i let the car warm up about 15 sec at least. You'll notice if you warm it up a bit it changes from 1st gear to 2nd gear easily.

for the first few minutes, i wouldn't turn on the A/C. Once i get into the highway & speed is up to 80/km/h plus. I close the windows & turn on the A/C.

The next bit i actually learnt from BMW HK Owners Club, i add Caltex Clean Power every 5000 km.

i'm sure you get acquire similar stuff from Canada, here's Caltex link on the product.

I'm averaging 42mpg (calculated) in my 330d. That's a reasonable amount of motorway work at 80-100mph mixed with some town driving and some "spirited" back roads. Gotta love that kind of performance mixed with the economy!

But Matt, your gallon is 25% bigger than a U.S. gallon! Your 42 mpg would only be 33 mpg on the other side of the pond.

Hmmm, terrible thought just occurred. Maybe I'm only getting 24 mpg 'cause the gauge is set for Imperial gallons. Nah! BMW wouldn't do that to me. Would they?

My secret is just to drive really smoothly for everything. Launch the car smoothly... take corners smoothly... apply throttle smoothly... select the correct gear for the correct situation.

Seriously, if you focus on driving in a smooth manner (even if you like to speed like me) it will improve your gas mileage. Other than that, I just run good gasoline and ensure that tire pressures are correct and that sort of thing.

Also, if you think apply throttle like squeezing a sponge, you will find that you can get very smooth and serious acceleration without using full throttle much. That is, gradually open the throttle as you feel the car accepting the power.

Do you do alot of stop and go driving in HK? Last time I was there, traffic was terrible, especially in Tsim sha shui and Mongkok area.. The express way to the airport is nice though. I imagine people probably take their car all the way to Lantau for some fast driving

Agreed! Just be nice to yr car, she'll reward you. To avoid stop-and-go, i tend to leave home early to work.

I'm averaging 9.5 litres per 100 km, better than the 9.8 litres per 100 km during the first two months. Still not as good as what I got on my old E46.

Speed can make a big difference. I tried something a few days ago. On a level road with no wind I set the cruise at 125 km/hr, and the consumption was just below 7.5 litres per 100 km, but when I dropped the speed to 100 km/hr the consumption dropped to 6.5 litres per 100 km. Unfortunately I don't like to drive the car for gas mileage.
