buying a 09 m3 without warranty...help!!
hello all,
I am looking to get into a 09 M3 with 49.9k miles but w/o warranty and am concerned about out of pocket costs... from your experience, is it worth it to purchase the extended warranty plan from BMW for about $7k?? Any info pertaining to the M3 maintenance and reliability aspect, would be much appreciated...and no worries, nothing will scare me away from one...just get me prepared...  Thanks in advance!! |

thats the magic question... i am not sold on it being worth it... seems like everyone that i know beats on their Ms and nothing ever goes wrong with the car. i also kinda feel like if something does eventually go wrong, it will cost way less than $7k to fix. i probably will steer clear.

Can it be CPO'd before you buy it? People on here talk about doing this, but I have no idea how to go about it...

7 grand? IMHO, no it's not worth it.
You really have to do your homework on these cars and make sure you check the car top to bottom before purchasing it. And if you are going to opt for going out of warranty, then you better know or be willing to learn how to DIY.

Anybody can purchase an extended warranty regardless of the number of original owners.
For a car to CPO'd, it needs to be done prior to the original Manufactures warranty expires and you will have to pay the $450(if i remember correctly) inspection fee. If any items appear during the inspection which does not meet BMW's requirements for CPO, you need to get that corrected (tire tread not sufficient ect..) Once that is done, your car then qualifies for the CPO. Now you just have to pay for it. I spoke with my SA quite a bit about the M3 issues and he told me he never sees M3's in for repairs other than maintenance and the occasional issue but nothing major. The E90 has in his opinion is pretty bullet proof. He said that if you change the fluids in the car like the pre free maintenance, you will most likely not have an issue. He has not seen a M3 that was maintained like this in the shop. Our area does have a ton of m3's so it is not like they are uncommon here.

The e9x has proven to be less of a pain than previous M3s. It is still an M3 though and if something goes wrong don't expect it to be cheap.
These questions pop up at least 2-3 times a week around here, and it is 100% a personal decision. Some people have had poor experiences in the past and vow to never own a car out of warranty. Others either get lucky and never have issues or over maintain their car so they don't worry about it. Really the choice lies in your hands and should be made based on your personal tolerances/ability to deal with headaches should they arise. It is a good sign that if you look around the forum you will not see as many horror stories as you would with many other cars. BMW did a great job with the e9x M3. |

Those saying $7K is alot to spend on warranty..that $7K could represent one major repair from BMW..no way I would own this car without a warranty..

Anyways, I may as well answer OP (it is Christmas time). A warranty is an insurance policy. If you're asking on here, sounds like you should get it. If you're mech inclined I say no, maintain and fix it yourself and gamble that you won't have a repair that costs as much as the warranty would over time. Mine just expired, and knock on wood, this car, (just like my e46 that I drove across country 2x) has been very reliable. |

If your looking to spend 7gs on a warranty.. why not put the same 7k towards a newer / lower milage car that still has the factory bumper to bumper warranty.

If you are really set on getting into this car I recommend you do the following;
1) Insist to have the car inspected at a BMW Dealership (Here in Canada we have what is called "Certified" it basically means a BMW Dealership gives the car a complete inspection and certifies the work ~ you may have a similar, if not the same program in the US) 2) Get all of the service reports on the car. They should be available at any BMW Dealership. 3) Grab one of your knowledgeable friends that knows cars and go over the results of 1 & 2 above with a fine tooth comb. If it is a private sale ,,, insist of 1 and 2 above to be done. Once you do this and you still want the car renegotiate the sale price based on what if any work is to be done as found and identified during the BMW inspection. Ask this question half way into the inspection, this will do two things a) they will make a good inspection and b) the end result will be as near to the truth as you may come ---> As this is done ask BMW what would it cost me to purchase an extended warrenty for this car, if they are willing to do it then that is a good indication the car has a clean bill of health ... so don't get the extended warranty (save the money for future repairs if they surface, they will be far less then the 7K) ... If BMW is not prepared to sell you extended warranty on the car walk away and find a better car.

Example: my car has 45k and the warranty just expired (2008) from time. If I purchased the extended 7 yrs 100k warranty, being that the orig 5 is up you're really only getting 2 years or till 100k. So pay attention to the in service date and miles. |

 sry i posted this very repetitive question..i did search...like Pontrelli said, just wanted more opinions thats all... i am trying to upgrade from an 2000 e46...as you can all imagine, its quite a jump...a jump that i can barely afford...but its now or never....so wanna do it....so, again, just looking for more opinions...just to reassure me...thats all... |
