possible scam?

someone email reply my craigslist ad said he wants to buy my car, and he explain to me the Acura dealership wants to buy his car and offer him, if he find a car that he like (my e92) then the dealer will purchase the car right off my hand and trade in his car with $500 more. he said i will have seamless transaction cause the transaction will be handle by the dealership and could give me a check within this week.

Do you guys think it is a scam?

Drive to the Acura dealership and speak to someone in person. If they confirm it there then it seems legit.

so he is selling his car to acura, but having them make the check out to you?

seems ok, a dealership wouldn't stick their neck out if this was smelling foul.

scam, no double about it. When I sold a car, I got one of those scam emails and I played along for shits and giggle to see how it would play out. Well, they ended up sending me a cashiers check drawn on Wachovia bank (which happen to be my bank too) and it had an out of state Car Sense name on it as the account owner. Turns out they some how got hold of the Car Sense account information and were printing up fake cashier check on the Wachovia account using Car Sense information. It looked real and all but did not pass the test.

In my deal they over paid and wanted me to refund the money immediately, via my bank account information. Yeah they want it refunded fast before the bank could verify it was fake check but it took my Wachovia bank all but 5 minutes to determine it was fake. My scammer never expected me to have the same bank so verification was not hard.

So even when it may look legit it may not be. I personally want cash on any deals I do, I tell people up front cash or no deal. I am not interest chasing people for bounce checks and things like that. Remember Cash is King everything thing else walks in a private sale.

I agree^ Except when some ridiculous sellers won't accept a deposit to hold the vehicle while you wait for the rest of funds to clear.

They obviously have never tried to withdraw thousands or move funds from another account to withdraw. Seriously some people have no concept of that at sell out from under you. Really grinds my gears haha

Any way, back on topic... sounds like a scam.

I'm curious how this turns out

Since it seems the Acura dealer is local, you can easily drive over and confirm everything

do you have the info to the salesman/etc who is dealing with your so called buyer?

I sold a car to someone on craigslist as well, but wouldn't give them a thing until we went right to the bank and had her sign the papers and then the bank hand me a check.

If you call or drive to the dealership and give them the information, they can tell you if it's legit or not, but this sounds like a scam.

Whatever the outcome, post results. There's always a new scam variant and I'm just curious to know if this is one of them.

On my recent auto post on Craigslist, I received an email from a lady who is interested in my car, but she needs to determine insurance costs. Her husband will pay for the car, but she has to cover the monthly insurance payments.

As a result, she provides a link to an almost official looking insurance quoting website link and expects for you to enter information about your car, yourself, probably ssn #, etc.

What made it suspicious is that she would never reply to any of my emails when questioned about the car in general.

thanks for the replies,

so i met the guy today, he check out the car and test drive it, and we agree on that we will take the car to Acura dealership to let them check it, and if everything is good, i will get a check directly from the dealership.

so basically the dealership buy his car and pay the money to me. sounds weird but we'll see how it turns out. this guys seems legit, founds his info online and he is a industrial engineer work for Boeing.

I see this as being legit. Guy is selling his car to Acura, getting a tax deduction by being able to use his old car as a trade in on a purchase of your car from Acura. The dealership doesn't have the vehicle he wants, they told them to find it on his own and will buy it from you to sell to him. Counts as a deal for the dealership, plus they get a trade in.
